Title: Large disk install
Post by: alanh on May 05, 2011, 11:22:01 AM
Trying to install 7.5.1 on a gigabyte mainboard - has integarted ethernet (realtek 8111) which doesnt work well. Got an intel PCI Express e1000 card which seems to work on the web interface but not with putty. Have 2 x 2TB sata disks (set to ide in bios). So I need to reinstall.  Wondering if I need to set the disk mode to LARGE or LBA rather than AUTO.  First time took about 6 hours to format etc, then longer than that to set the quotas - a bit long maybe?  I will give another install a go and maybe change the disk mode. Also has sata dvd drive, but got around that by doing what others suggested by booting from cd and then having the ISO on a USB stick accessed as a hard drive. any wisdom appreciated.

Change SATA mode to default (not compatibility mode, name is different on each BIOS) and your format time shouldn't be more than 15min.
If I'm not wrong you can watch the format process on other console screen (ALT+F2 ; ALT+F3)

And final tip: if you're starting over and can try it: use SME8b6
yes... isn't final... but it's RHEL5 (so support new hardware) and it's really good.

thanks for that.  I set the sata mode to AHCI, and installed 8b6 - yes now it formats in about 15 mins and the install was under and hour all up.  will have a play with 8 and see how we go.  have you found it pretty stable in your testing?

That is strange, what is the problem with putty? Are you sure it is related to your NIC not to something else in your network or to a configuration setting?

That was an option I was thinking about as well.

Yes, it's stable.
Just a little more difficult to install contribs because is not oficial yet so wiki do not contain any info besides http://wiki.contribs.org/SME8.0_Contribs_QA
As long as you keep with basic install you'll have no problems.
If you REALLY need a contrib, take some time to test it on SME8b6 on a spare machine (or vmware) before put in production
