Title: Why not use Centos 6 in SME8 ?
Post by: lucho115 on May 18, 2011, 02:13:15 PM
If the release of sme8 is not coming soon, why not wait to centos 6 ? I think that is better than use and os that have 4 years.
Sorry about my english.
Thanks

CentOS 6 does not yet exist. When it does, we will find that there are many differences between CentOS 5 and CentOS6.  Moving SME8 to use CentOS 6 would introduce substantial more delay in completion and release of SME8.  I don't think many people want that.

Thats true but if sme8 is not coming in the next months (centos 6 will release next month) maybe use centos 6 will be a rigth decision.
Sorry about my english again.
Thanks

Most of us would prefer a tried and tested system, rather than one which was on the cutting edge.

It is a good question i think.

Though i don't really need bleeding edge software technology, progress dose have influence over the decisions i make whether to use SME or some other server software.

We have to keep in mind that the right path is the middle one and not only the conservative or the extremely new ones.
If SME 8 doesn't even reach the RC stage soon, i for example will have to replace it with some other updates server software BECAUSE SME7 can't provide the platform for a lot (and growing) updated software versions of "addins" - contribs if you may, like Wordpress (next gen will require sql5), Subversion (Centos 4 only support up till 1.4.6 - now there is 1.6.x), and a lot more ...

I understand the problem of having little funds and relaying on contributed time of developers to progress but open source projects have almost all the same conditions to evolve right ?

Don't get me wrong, i think SME server is the best way to provide a stable environment for small offices and I'll install it back as soon as 8 will take the next step towards final and become RC but for now, i do not have a choice but re[lacing 7 with some modern servers like Zentyal or ClearOS that basically provide the same basic functionality SME dose but with higher compatibility to NEW versions of added software !

It's all very well to wait for others to release sme 8, but have you done anything to help progress.
You can at least verify some bugs and help the developers that way, rather than saying you will just jump ship to another OS.

As Charlie has pointed out, a switch to another version of Centos now (if Centos 6 existed yet), would cause considerable technical headaches and delay the release of sme8 for much longer than staying with Centos 5.x.
You seems to grossly underestimate the development time taken to fit the sme system into an existing OS, and resolve all the bugs & technical issues etc, especially when there is such a small development team.

I have used sme8 for over 2 years now since early betas.

Don't attack my opinion just because i shared it with everyone.

I do NOT sit and wait for others to do things for me.
Since i am not a developer, i help by donating money from time to time and with different things like translating (I am the main Hebrew translator) and other things.
Please respect my opinon as i respect yours without labeling my post with descriptions.

Ah yes... the occasional unrest and dissatisfaction posts.  I've made more than one myself.

I think the notion of going to a CentOS6 base is worth exploring.

TRUE that moving to a new base distro can be potentially upsetting to the whole process.  But an exploratory exercise to determine how upsetting that may be could/should be done.  After all, SME8 is still in beta -- has been for a LONG time with no signs of going final any time soon.  How upsetting could something like this actually be given that RHEL6/CentOS6 does not seem to be significantly different from 5+updates (and the fact that the vast majority of things from RHEL4/CentOS4/SME7 seem to port to SME8 easily enough)?  And given that there is not even a tentative deadline or even a schedule for the release of SME8, I can't see how the change could be that upsetting.

I wonder, though.  What would it take to create a "Roll Your Own SME" set of packages?  What I mean by this is something like "a series of scripts and packages that are unique to creating the SME operating environment (sans the installer)" that are basically capable of transforming a RHEL/CentOS installation into an SME server.  With such a package set, the exploration of whether pushing forward to a "6" is actually workable or not.  I am not convinced that it would be even a little disruptive given the current release schedule of SME8. (That is to say "since there is no release schedule of SME8, how can this 'really' cause delay?)

@ALL: the main SME's aim is security and stability

we all know that the dev team is small and no one is payed .. so, IMHO, this discussion should stop here.. there are no resources to do such a work, there's no time to do such a test.

if any of you can find a big amount of money to pay someone to do this work, he/she is welcome..

all, I repeat, IMVHO

Absolutely!!  But one does get concerned when applications as common as WordPress are not supported.

not supported? where? why? what?

you can install mysql 5.x and php 5.x in SME7 too.. SME is linux and as long as you find suitable rpms you can do (almost) everything..
there are some drawbacks, of course.. you must pay attention each time you update your server and check the newest conf files for changes/differences with the ones created by SME's template system..

Well I am just the newbie here, but "if it doesn't just work" to me that sure sounds like it is not supported.  IMHO.  If I am going to go through all that stuff to use SME and worry about breaking it on upgrade then why use SME?  If I fool around enough with any distro I could get it to do almost anything...it just wouldn't be a stock disto anymore.

Just saying....

Continuing this discussion is pointless. There is no intention to move SME to CentOS 6 at this time.
