Title: Wordpress 3.2
Post by: jncs on July 04, 2011, 01:50:04 AM
Hi!

Wordpress 3.2 is almost lunched... see: http://wordpress.org/news/2011/07/are-you-ready-for-wordpress-3-2/
 (http://wordpress.org/news/2011/07/are-you-ready-for-wordpress-3-2/)
I'm using SME Server 7.5.1 with MySQL 5.0.82sp1 and PHP 5.1.6.

The PHP version was installed using centosplus repository but this version is not enough to Wordpress 3.2.

I will have to install Ubuntu and leave SME Server...  :-(

Anyone have some advice?

How can I upgrade mysql and php? I already done:
Code: [Select]
yum --enablerepo=centosplus --exclude=perl* update mysql phpand there's nothing to upgrade!

Any suggestions?

do you really need WP 3.2?

Hi Stefano.

That is a good question!
Probably not but all wordpress upgrades have a lot of new features and a security level increase.

Is so complicated to compile PHP 5.2.4 to run on SME Server 7.5.1? I don't know how to do that...
But if somebody already compiled PHP 5.1.6 why not do the same with PHP 5.2.4?

I would love to have more knowledge to do that...

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=php+5.2.4+centos4+rpm

just remember to test the upgrade on a test machine, not on the production one..

another possibility is to migrate to SME8.b6

If you are going to upgrade, it should be to 5.2.17. There are rpms here which can probably be made to work with SME 7.5.1:

do you really need WP 3.2?

Anybody that does not upgrade to the latest version of wordpress is asking for trouble. All new releases include bug and security fixes. Some security fixes that come out are marked as "Urgent"

So anybody that is not using the latest version of wordpress is asking to be hacked.

As far as upgrading sme 7.x to run WP 3.2 on it, forget about it, SME 7.X is an old technology, which is based on Centos 4.x. You will have better results if you use SME 8b6 which is based on Centos 5.X, which is also an old technology since Centos is coming out with v.6 soon, but still better than using SME 7.x.
I know that "Beta" Sounds scary, but so far I have almost no issues with it. Works for me.

Besides, if you monkey around with standard SME 7.x, you will have issues upgrading later to SME 8. At this point, it is almost not worth it, just use SME 8b6

If that is the case I wonder where the problem really is. I do not know that many popular web products that release security updates in the frequencies as they do: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=wordpress

It seems they are bitten a lot by SQL injection and cross-side scripting attacks, which unfortunately are in the top 5 of the most occurring coding errors: http://cwe.mitre.org/top25/index.html

I hope that a lot of security issues will be eliminated with wordpress 3.2 (Already released)
The reason for this is because previous versions of wordpress supported a lot of legacy code. Wordpres 3.2 only supports PHP5+ and SQL5+ and support for IE6 was dropped. So wordpress 3.2 is much faster than before because a lot of legacy code was eliminated, and hopefully this will make it more secure.

just to add my opinion on why upgrade to wp 3.2 or abowe.
i was continuing using 3.1.4 last compatible with sme 7.4 and upgrading tht theme an some pluging
i messed all with my best surprise. many coder now are considering 3.2 the basis and
3.1.4 is totally deprecated
