My SME server is using a CIFS share on a Windows Home Server to perform backups. Here is a copy and paste from my configuration report in the server-manager->administration->backup and restore:
Backup is Enabled.
Backup is made on LAN workstation 192.168.0.123 via cifs
Destination backup share folder is Users/XXXX
Login is XXXX
Password is ********
Number of rotating backup sets is 3
Number of daily backups contained in each set is 1
Compression level (0-9) of backup is 6
Daily backup occurs at 2:00
Each daily backup session is cleanly timed out after 8 hours.
Full backup sessions (new backup set) are allowed everyday
Here is a typical report:

I have also been getting other reports before this:

Error while moving backup file /mnt/smb/tmp_dir/XXX.MyDomain.com/full-201107030200.1.dar

By far the most regular disturbing report is "Disk space not available". I get this even when the report says the regular backup was successful.
What is going on?

After reading your post I did a very similar setup for CIFS backup to a Windows7 workstation. The backup started on schedule, completed successfully and added incremental changes every day. Disk statistics are reported correctly.

This week I moved the backup to another Linux server using a samba share. It again worked but showed
"Disk space not available" rather than the detail shown from the Windows7 backup.

Are you sure you have enough storage available on your server? Due to the nature of the backup mechanism, you need twice the size of the daily backup volume IIRC.
-
The backup used 83.9 GB leaving 108.67 GB free after. Does this mean I need to free up more space before the next full backup?
-
IMHO backup routine is unable to get the free space.. but I don't know why :-)
-
Accurate disk info was reported when doing the same backup to a Windows 7 desktop.

so it isn't a SME's issue, IMHO
-
The next full bachup completed sucessfully leaving 28.94 GB or 18% free disk space.

What is the purpose of "Moving backup files to target directory ..."? What are the consequences of "Disk space not available"?
Is my system backed up or not when I get that error message? It says the backup was successful. Was it?

The backup files are processed and stored in a temp directory on the target disk. When finished,
the files are moved. A full backup is done once a week with incremental changes processed daily.
Two backup sets are saved and I expect 1 is overwritten each week. I think "Disk space not available"
is simply a "failure to connunicate." Did you try "verify workstation backup?"

I'm back after sitting on this a while. I've just reinstalled SME 8.0beta6 and the last backup shows the same problem, "Disk space not available". I have verified that the system is backed up, and was backed up since I was able to do a successful restore.
Is this a bug? If so, I'll report it.
