Post by: cipandales on July 21, 2011, 01:27:10 PM
Hello !

I moved our server to a data center. I have just one Ethernet Adapter and it is connected directly to the internet (without firewall), so i want to know wich server configuration is appropiate.

Can you help, please ?

Thank you

This is not a very smart solution, as SME Server is not designed to be run in such a setup.

If you only have one NIC you are in a catch-22: In server-only mode, which is default when having one NIC you are exposing far too much services which should not be exposed, making your server very insecure. In server-gateway mode the WAN side, exposed to the external net exposes a minimum of services, but you need two NICs for that.

I have installed SME Server as a virtual machine.
You said that SME works better as a gateway. It is ok if i use 2 nic's, one for internet and one wich is not connected (virtual) and choose server-gateway to run ?

Thank you !
