I have a SME server 7.5.1 behind a 4 port router but wanted to change it to Server and Gateway method.
I have the 2 network cards in and server passes test to connect to Contribs.org
However I can't ping anything beyond the server. My Web browser can not find anything beyond the server.
Using a Static IP 96.53.96.42
Subnet 255.255.255.252
Gateway IP 96.53.96.41
DNS 64.59.168.13 and 64.59.168.15 I've tried leaving the line blank regards DNS settings as well as using these - neither works.
Same settings work fine if used in the router and with the server behind it which is how this is getting through
It is probably something simple but it eludes me.
Thanks

It sounds to me that your workstation is not using the SME server's local IP as its default route.

Good call, I neglected to say I have tried setting as a fixed gateway IP 10.0.0.1 which is what the sme server is set at and I have tried setting to Obtain an IP address automatically at the workstation as well as DNS - which is current setting as I bounce back and forth. between the 2 trying to get it to work.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks,

How far do you get with a Trace Route (tracert) and how is the LAN & WAN of the router setup ?
Are you able to set up a DMZ on the router, pointing to the SME server ?

Are you sure this is your subnet? As that would mean you can only have two hosts in this subnet.

You do not need to set the DNS settings on SME Server as SME Server is perfectly capable of resolving domain names itself.
It would help if you could provide a diagram of your network topology, to rule out wiring issues. Normally your setup should look something like this:
WAN --- SME Server --- LAN
Where the WAN side of the server and the LAN side have a different IP range. If you want to connect multiple hosts to SME Server on the LAN side you can connect a switch there:
+----- Client1
WAN --- SME Server --- Switch --- Client2
+----- ...
+----- Clientn
From the post you wrote I make up there is a router between you WAN and the SME Server WAN side, am I correct?
WAN --- Router --- SME Server --- LAN

I was trying to replace the router so the SME server is exactly as your first diagram - from the SME server I can go to "root" and ping the Internet side.
From a client I can ping the server - but not beyond - its like port 80 only goes as far the server from the WAN side.
Currently I'm having to run
WAN - Router - Switch - +Server
-+Workstation 1
+Workstation 2
Workstations are able to be set to use server as Gateway this way .
Desired WAN - Server - Switch - Workstations
As mentioned I have tried without DNS server settings - Speaking with RogersCable.net they thought initially that the change in MAC address from router to server would prevent the server from seeing the internet but they had traffic there.
I'm still wondering it it couldn't be something like the above paragraph so today may try setting MAC address of router to emulate the Mac Address of the Server, if they have to reset to do that perhaps changing to the desired method will work.

ping has nothing to do with port 80.

But you have already told us that the server can see the internet - "server passes test to connect to Contribs.org".
Please create a bug report, and we will go through a diagnostic process there. There is a possibility this is a bug.

The only thing I can see is I am using a 3com 100 mbit card for internet and a Intel Gigabit card for local - I think I have a 2nd 3com card - but sitting 50 miles away, I think I will try having 2 the same to see if it could affect it.
Another thought is what if I did a install over top of the current system? - I do winrar - data backups not trusting Dar as it times out on a single file restore from 100 GIGS of Data where as I know Winrar works.
Thanks, for your thoughts.
