Title: setup cable connection ?
Post by: wollfgang vonderschmitt on July 14, 2002, 06:36:32 PM
Hi,

this are my access datas from my cable provider, with dynamic IP

dns server: 145.xxx.x.xx and 145.xxx.x.xx
subnetmask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway:   172.xx.x.x
ISP:   auto

Question-
how to setup the sme server correctly?

the following config will work , but not satisfactly for me.
========================================

I have 2 PC's with internal network via one switch
then another PC for SME Server V5.5, which is now configured as server +gateway
dedicated
- local IP 192.168.1.1    255.255.255.0
now there is the problem to entry the datas, so I choosed option 4=static IP adress
- static IP : 172.xx.x.xx    ( found this IP when I was direct connected without the sme server )
- subnetmask:   255.255.0.0
-gateway:   172.xx.x.x

with this configuration I can use the internet from lan :-)
but I have no access from outside to the ibays or to ftp :-(
I'm registred at www.dyndns.org

appreciate any hint or tips to resolve this problem

Ciao Wolfgang

Hey Wolfgang,

I think that you are experiencing the same problems I have with the DNS server not operating correctly.

Maybe Mitel is starting to get sick of people using their distribution for free and are trying to get people to purchase support...?? I don't know.

One thing I have noticed is that upon killing or restarting the named server it must be run with tcpd or something since I am unable to kill it or even trying to restart it doesn't startup properly since it keeps coming back with named is already running.

As far as I can tell from your setup info that everything is working perfectly fine and will continue to do so as long as this problem with the named server is fixed.

Hope this helps you at all...

Hi Wolfgang von der Schmitt

Do You speak german? You also can contact me directly by simon.vetterli@psrc.ch.

So, You don't have to choose "option 4=static IP adress static".

Your provider din't give You a static IP-adress.

You have to choose option 2 = Use DHCP (send ethernet address as client identifier).

Then You get from Your ISP a IP-address. something with 172.xx.xxx.xx .

This work for me very good, I also have a cabel provider here in Switzerland.

I hope it's work for You.

With best regards.
