Title: Intel Atom hardware for SME 7.x , 8.x (compatibility and resourses)
Post by: damjan on January 12, 2012, 07:29:27 AM
Hello,

I'm in planning to turn one of the servers into more GREEN environment. The targeted server is handling less then 10 mailboxes , some scripts (Mailman) and that is pretty much of it.  Therefore I would like to setup existing SME 7.51 with :
Intel D410PT   with Atom D410 processor
Atom D410, 1,66 GHz, 1 core, 512kB cache, 10W.

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-board-d410pt.html

Is this motherboard compatible with SME distribution ?
Is build-in CPU powerful enough to handle SME 7.51 and forthcoming 8.x versions?

Thank you for your replay

D.

Is this motherboard compatible with SME distribution ?

My guess would be that it is with SME8 (beta) and is not with SME 7.5.1.

I would be quite surprised if it were not.

I'm still running SME 7.5.1 on a Celeron-1400MHz underclocked at 933 MHz. So your Atom at 1,66 GHz should be fine.

While you might be fine, others might not. Server load depends on configuration of active services, number of users and the intensity woth which these users and services use this server.
For instance SPAM fighting and anti-virus checking are well known resource intense processes. Another might be havy file access from a lot of users, filling up the available bandwidth of your server. Stating that your situation works is only helpfull by painting a picture of the conditions this system is used on and to what usage it is being exposed.

He is talking about about 10 mailboxes. So no so far from my loading, also with antispam, antivirus and horde. Except if he is handling thousands of emails each day, this is nearly nothing for my configuration and so should it be the same for his configuration. And this should answer his second question : Is build-in CPU powerful enough?

Did you end up going ahead with this? If so, how did it go?

I'm thinking about using an Asus EeeBox. I'm downsizing from a Dual P3 machine. I'm curious as to how it will go running 24x7 and also drivers.

I'm tossing up between this and a Shuttle PC with an Intel i3 processor 4GB ram.

I run sme 7.5 on a couple of atom dual core's very low users 1-3 and its a walk for it. Just mail, dansguardian and file shares. I also run affa on them to back up work server offsite

It went fine. The configuration works as expected. The board have no problem to run 7.5.1. Only thing is that I have change is network  card (with Realtek chip) on remaining  PCI slot. SME 7.5.1 was installed from USB stick on one of the hard drives.

Then I transferred old data with Affa and added the second hard drive to made raid working with new installation.

The version 8bx did not work as I expected. I have found some problems mentioned here:

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=48149.0

and the situation where anaconda stops after the update so I decided to stay with 7.5.1.

Hope that helps.

That was acctually my next question. I've started to look at a Shuttle box.

The reason for this is because you can get an optional second drive holder. Which would be good for Raid.

I was wondering how I would go with the network card. It's a JMC251. How do I know if it's supported? There is no PCI slots for another network card if it's not, so I'll have to get it right first go.

The reason for the change in hardware is because I'll need to upgrade to v8, and I figure changing hardware at the same time is probably the best option, so I build it up then swap it over, to minimise down time.

I would use something different and with certified support, like an HP microserver..
