Trying to workout how to install VMWARE Tools on SME Server 8 running on ESXi 5.0.
Information on the wiki only seems to be for ESXi 4 Update 1 http://wiki.contribs.org/VMware_Tools#SME_Server_8.0_Guest_on_ESXi_4.0_Update_1
Any ideas how to do it for ESXi 5?

Just follow the VMWare howto for linux installs with rpm: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1018392
(http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1018392)
for step 6 use yum localinstall /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-<version>.rpm

Do you really need VMWare tools? The draw back off them is that you need to recompile them after any kernel upgrade, otherwise your server will have no NICs for instance.

AFAIK, since esx3.5 there's no need to compile them.. but you have to run vmware-config-tool.pl script every time you upgrade your kernel, and you can't do it from a remote console as you can loose your connection..
