Title: Adding Windows 2008 server as second DC for SME (to remove the SME as PDC)
Post by: ctn on March 07, 2012, 07:40:01 PM
Hello,

I'm new to this forum and not a SME fan (sorry) but we have 2 old SME servers in our network that i want to migrate to a 2k8 windows server.
I'm not a Microsoft addict, and i would prefer a linux box for that job, but i simply want to remove this distro from my network (i'm a Debian addict) as i'm not comfortable with it.

As i have many Windows stations that are connected to the SME server using it as a domain controller, i guess i need to add my Win2K8 as a second Domain controller to the domain and then remove the SME.
I wasn't able to do so with dcpromo from the 2K8 server and, as i've read, this is because the SME server is a NT domain style whereas the 2K8 is an Active directory style.

So is there any way i can do that? even if i need to add an NT4 server then a 2K3 and finally my 2K8 (i can create virtual machines for that )

Any advices would be great.

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Julien.

Sounds like you're on the right track with a virtual NT4 as BDC then working up from there. I can't think of any other way to handle it.
