Title: on the fly compression

I have a sme server at home purly to backup using affa some production boxes. But space is becoming a premium.
Im wondering if there is a way like on windows to compress a directory so it can still be used.
Performance isnt an issue as its purly there to hold data.

Did you read the Affa wiki ?

Affa uses hard links so compression is probably not viable.

You would need to reduce the number of old backups retained using the settings for
scheduledKeep
dailyKeep
weeklyKeep
monthlyKeep
yearlyKeep

and then use the command
affa --cleanup JOB

to remove the old backups, to quote
"After you have lowered a keep value, e.g. , then archives with a higher indices will no longer be shifted and will exist for ever. This option finds these archives and deletes them.  you can delete or purge the oldest backups"

oh ok fair enough. Its not age old files that are the issue just i am backing to many machines up. Only put a 500 gig drive in it.

In theory yes, but in practice much more trouble than it is worth.
