Title: Cable Modem

Need Help.I have a e-smith 5.5 box with two 3com 905 pci network card, the cable modem is a Samsung SCM-110R Info Ranger.I cant have access to internet on the e-smith box.I tried i think everything but nothing work.Is there something special to do because i have another e-smith box with a cisco router
and everything is ok.

Just a thought I had the same problem:  I had to power off the server then unplug the modem for like 30 seconds the plug the modem back in and the turn the server on and everything started to work so that would be my first try.

Does your Cable Modem provide DHCP to your box or do you have to configure a static IP?  Some Cable Modem companies use DHCP, but require a DHCP reservation based on your MAC address.  Have you contacted the company and checked that?

Are you getting a connection light on both the modem and the NIC?  I don't belive many cable modems require a crossover cable, but if you aren't even getting a connection light its worth checking.  Have you tried just switching cables?

Most cable modems will remember the MAC address, check your Cable Modem for a reset button or leave your cable modem unplugged for +2 hours.

Richard,

I had the same problem a while back with 4.12 and 5.12 and both times I powered down the machine, unplugged the modem for at least 5 MINUTES, plugged the modem back and give it time to establish a connection before starting the computer.  I was told it had something to do with clearing the connection at the cable company end, which takes several minutes after disconnecting.

Basically what you need is to find your primary DNS IP and plug that into the DNS configuration on your Box, it worked for me.

One gotcha is that you can probably only have one DHCP address from your provider.  So make sure your cable modem is plugged directly into your SME box (not a hub or gateway router).

Are you using your SME box for an internet gateway?  If so, did you try switching the cables on your SME box?  In other words, are you sure your public and private NIC cards are connected to the right networks?  I've heard it is hard to tell on gateway boxes where you have two identical NICs.  My server uses different brand NIC cards so the public/private networks were easy to distinguish.

When I set my server up, I had to leave my modem unplugged for a few minutes (not hours) and it reset to the new MAC address just fine.  Perhaps older modems have longer refresh intervals?

When i config my e-smith box i had two 3 com network card and e-smith can see them but when i go into the root and do ifconfig he can see only the ETH 0 and not the ETH 1.I change the card for a different kind and the same problem happen.
What's the problem.

It sounds like you may have accidently chosen the same "driver/NIC" for both the internal and external network when setting up the machine. I suggest you do a reinstall using NICs with different chipsets and make sure you choose the first on the list for the local driver and the second on the list for the external driver.

If this is a fresh install, just use 5.1.2 until 5.5 gets straightened out.  Also, swap out one of the 3Coms for a cheapo Linksys card and use the Linksys for your external interface, the drivers are completely different so SME won't get confused.
Lastly, turn OFF your cable modem for two hours, turn it on, let it connect, then turn on your newly-installed 5.1.2 box and you should be good to go after configuration (usually, for cable, DHCP w/MAC address).
