I just updated my 7.5.1 version to 7.6. Now the machine will not boot. I get this message: Uncompressing Linux Invalid compression format Err=2. Don't know if this is bug or I have done something wrong. Any help appreciated

Uncompressing Linux Invalid compression format Err=2
Please search Google.
Test hard disk with say the UBCD or drive manufacturers test disk
Rum memtest
Boot from the sme7.6 CD into rescue mode & see what happens

Thanks, Mary.
I'm no expert and appreciate the help. I will try your suggestions. I do have a current USB backup attached.

You do not need to be an expert to search Google. There are many results for your error, including disk & memory problems as well as CD media issues. My suggestions covered those.
I do have a current USB backup attached.
Good, but check/test your hardware before going the restore route.
UBCD = Ultimate Boot CD, Google for it

Thanks, Mary.
Downloading the UBCD now and 7.6 ISO.

What if you boot without the attached backup device?
-
I did not try that. Machine is an email server and we had to get back on line quickly. Following Mary's advice, I did find one of the two RAID drives had failed. Unplugged that drive, but system would not boot. Ran Rescue from 7.6 disk and it appeared to update to 7.6 to the remaining drive, but still would not boot. Did a full install of 7.6 on the same drive and it installed properly and is running fine. I will now add another drive to the RAID.
Thanks to all for the help!

does anybody read admin/root email?
It's OK Stefano, I do.
Obviously many people do not, or are not aware of it !!!!????
It's one of the first things I do when setting up sme, fwd admin emails to my email address.
-
Thanks. I do as well. In this case I did not receive an email about a defective drive.

I'm quite sure that you had at least an email coming from mdadm monitoring..
does you SME manage a real domain (i.e. mydomain.com) or a "private" one (i.e. mydomain.local)?
do you forward root's email to an external account?
-
Mine is a private domain. I do have the admin email forwarded to an external address and do get email from admin.
