Hello,
I am running SME 8.0 (upgraded from 8b7 with no problems) in a VM. The physical machine is an HP DL360 G5, dual-quad Xeons, 16 GB RAM running ESXi 5. The VM has been assigned two procs and 1 GB RAM, plenty for what I need. Great setup for a vanity/family site, I couldn't be happier with SME.
I have VMTools installed (which was a bit of a chore!)...however, when I installed the CentOS kernel update this morning, noticed the following errors (booting into an earler kernel has no errors):
VM Communication Interface [FAILED]
VM Communication Interface Socket Family [FAILED]
Guest Operating System Daemon [OK]
[FAILED]
...that last FAILED looks exactly like that, nothing preceding it.
Re-install VMTools?
Thanks in advance

Re-install VMTools?
I would guess so. Or delete them - you don't need vmware-tools to run SME server. Why did you install them?
Also I would note that vmware-tools are not part of SME server, so off-topic in this forum.

Why did you install them?
I thought VMTools helps with memory management and such? They are installed in an effort to reach optimal performance, that's the only reason.
Also I would note that vmware-tools are not part of SME server, so off-topic in this forum.
Sorry about that...pls move to wherever more appropriate if need be.

AFAIK every time you upgrade your kernel AND you have vmware-tools running, you have to call
vmware-config-tools.pl
please be aware you must execute it form a local console, not from a remote one

Just out of curiosity: does that also hold true when run from a screen session when connected remotely?

vmware-config-tools.pl
Stefano, that is exactly what I was looking for - many thanks (didn't even have to restart)!!

never tested..
I prefer to use the console inside vmware client

Please pardon my intrusion here, but I have to add that a reason to have vmware-tools is to be able to order guest OSs to shutdown, when a power failure is detected by ESXi (via a ups mechanism).
@knyte: please pardon my OT: how are the network cards configured in your ESXi? vmxnet, vmxnet2? And which type did you select to install SME as? CentOS? Red Hat 5 32-bit?

Procs: Dual
Mem: 1024 MB
OS type: Other 2.6 Linux (32-bit)
NIC: Flexible
To be honest, when I created the VM, I wasn't completely sure what to pick, either...so, took a stab at it with this config, and so far there have been no problems to speak of. I'm sure CentOS 4/5/6 (32-bit) would be fine as well, but at the time I didn't know where SME was going/basically had no idea and took a guess. I'm not at all above trying something else if it's recommended/suggested.

It may disconnect your session while reconfiguring the network interfaces.

Why did you install them?
When vmware-tools installed it also installs the new network drivers (vmxnet(2,3) which helps to connect faster between VMware machines. It also speedup the disk access. In general performance with vmware-tools installed is better, so there is benefit to install them.
