Title: external pop server access from client
Post by: Dave Parry on July 22, 2002, 09:26:54 PM
We have been running e-smith for about 3-4 months now, easy to set up and just works.

Two problems we have.

1. some of our users want to access external pop accounts from their clients. We could do this with viking but not with SME(So I think!) I dont want to change the server as these accounts change all the time so a change to fetchmail is out.

2 Changing the filter for e-mail lists some examples would be useful!!

Thanks for any help

Dave

If you have users on the LAN who want to access pop accounts on servers outside the LAN and thru SME then you don't have a problem. Outlook express will grab mail from external POP accounts no problems - other mail clients should too.

If you want to have SME download the external POP mail and distribute it amongst users see http://e-smith.dyndns.org/  Fetchmail generator

Good call Rob, I goofed up and misread POP as SMTP.  If you want to give your users external access to your SMTP server with relay rights then you would want to use pop-before-smtp, if you are simply granting them POP access only they should be able to do this after you set your mail settings to "public".

Thanks,

Hi Rob,

I’ve downloaded and installed the Fetchmail Generator and now I have some questions/suggestions:

1.) Why not implement this to the user-manager https://my_sme_server/user-manager so the users them selves can provide the information and password from the ISP.

2.) How about scheduling the polling from the ISP? It would be nice if it was possible to set it to poll mail every hour, or maybe with 30 minutes interval.

Regards

Dennis Johansen
