Title: how should i name my second or more servers
Post by: purvis on July 25, 2012, 09:12:16 AM
I am sure this is trivial to many.
I have my first main server in server only mode and its name is 'server0" and my domain name is similiar to  "mydomain.com"

How should i set up menu second servers.
Should i set them up as server1 and use the exact same domain name of "mydomain.com".
I might want the servers to somehow interact by internal web programming/design as seamlessly as possible if it could.
thanks

Name all servers differently.

If you want additional servers to resolve web requests etc, then give them appropriate main domain names eg mydomain2.com, mydomain3.com

If web etc resolution is not important or required they can have the same main domain name as your main sme server eg mydomain.com.

It really depends on your requirements, of which you have told us very little.
As your servers will appear to be in server only mode, then there will be a lot of control being handled by your main router/gateway eg port forwarding & proxy pass to different servers etc.

Thank you Mary.
I wanted to be sure.
At one location.
I am going to place a faster and larger disk server up for the main data server and let the older server alone to do the wan things needed which has low volume usage and the only stress on it is virus scanning of all files which is done weekly.
