Currently running SME 7.6 and have been looking at the results of top and noticed clamscan is using an awful lot of CPU and seems to have been running for hours, is there anyway of checking the progress of clamscan? Is this sort of usage normal, it's not something i've picked up on previously.

Look in its log file.
You do expect it to run for a very long time, and accumulate a lot of CPU usage. It should only use a significant proportion of current CPU usage if it is active scanning files - either via email or scanning files in i-bays via cron job.
