Did you search the Internet re this issue.
It seems that samba 4 or maybe samba 3.7.x (as a minimum) is needed to support domain joining & domain login, & the samba version in sme8 is lower than that.
rpm -q samba3x
samba3x-3.5.10-0.110.el5_8
Start Googling.
I suggest you lodge a bug report at bugzilla as this ability obviously will be desired by many people soon as Window 8 usage spreads.

Yep
Need it also here. We plan to go windows 8 on all workstation with the special offer. Would be nice to know if there is a workaround.

Mary has already says what needs to be done as the first step.
I suggest you lodge a bug report at bugzilla ...

According to some "rumors" it seems that using the same procedure as for 7 it should work.
(http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.network.samba.internals/59476 (http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.network.samba.internals/59476))
This is the standard "tweak" for 7:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManWorkstation\Parameters]
“DNSNameResolutionRequired”=dword:00000000
“DomainCompatibilityMode”=dword:00000001
I can't test it due to the lack of a Windows 8 Pro PC; if anybody could test it I think this should be useful for everybody.

Can someone confirm this?

Can someone confirm this?
I don't yet have Windows 8 so my comments are based on google search results.
There appears to be 2 issues, one is the ability to join the domain, the other is the ability to login as a user.
Some tweaks will allow the domain to be joined, but not allow a user to login, so that may be the source of these "rumours".
There is a further issue as to whether smb2 is being used or is disabled on the Windows 8 PC.
My earlier reading (googling) suggested samba4 or (maybe) minimally samba 3.7.x was needed to support both domain joining & user login by a Windows 8 workstation.
This post
http://www.mail-archive.com/samba@lists.samba.org/msg121155.html
suggests that with samba 3.6.6 on the Linux domain controller, a Windows 8 PC (with smb2 enabled & with the Windows 7 registry tweaks in place) can join the domain , but does not support user login.
If smb2 is disabled on Windows 8 then domain joining & user login is possible, but there are some issues with logging off.
Also disabling smb2 on the domain controller seemed to also allow Windows 8 domain joining & user login.
There was further talk in that thread about smb.conf entries & possible adjustments to ports that may help resolve issues, but I'm not sure of the significance or usefulness of that.
So regarding sme8.1 server, on a quick read it seems a more recent version of samba is required than what sme8.1 currently has ie it has samba3x-3.5.10-0.110.el5_8
Can Windows 8 login to a samba 3.5.x domain as well as support user logins. It appears to be no, not with the current sme8.1 packages.
If samba was upgraded, and the tweaks referred to above were made then it seems possible, currently with minor issues.

Sorry I accidently edited out my earlier post (which I grabbed from cache & have reposted, ouch !!!).
Here is further comment.
This post is stating domain joining to samba 3.5.6 is possible
https://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2012-September/169193.html
No specific comment re supporting user logins, but maybe that is also possible if smb2 is disabled (as mentioned earlier here)

At last, I'm the happy ( :-? ) owner of a Windows 8 Pro PC: you can Join to SME 8 Domain using the same procedure as for Windows 7 (registry tweak inluded in
https://sme-ip/server-resouces/regedit (https://sme-ip/server-resouces/regedit) - http://your-sme-ip/server-resources/regedit/ (http://your-sme-ip/server-resources/regedit/)).
At the present day the Samba 3x package installed in SME is 3.6.6-0.129.el5 and Windows 8 is the current update at 28/01/2013.
After joining you're not immediately able to add users: you must reboot the joined PC and then you can add domain users too (this is an issue of Windows 7 too).
Bye

Yep joined the domain but something is still lacking when login in. Something that has to do with approbation relation between my station and the main domain.
RESOLVED!
Just modify this
HKLM\System\CCS\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters
DWORD DomainCompatibilityMode = 1
DWORD DNSNameResolutionRequired = 0
!!! Don't modify this !!!
HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Netlogon\Parameters
DWORD RequireSignOnSeal = 0
DWORD RequireStrongKey = 0
Netlogon got all the drive linked. That worked like a charm as far as i could see.
Just consider the modern UI "tablet appearance" menu as your new start button being expanded with four new interactive corner, you shouldn't be that losed. Any way you can add programms and folder shortcut to it.

Just in time to massivly benefit the upgrade deal from microsoft...
-
HKLM\System\CCS\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters
DWORD DomainCompatibilityMode = 1
DWORD DNSNameResolutionRequired = 0
This is exactely what is contained in http://your-sme-ip/server-resources/regedit/ (http://your-sme-ip/server-resources/regedit/) in .reg file related to Win7.
Bye

Could someone please add this information to the bug in the tracker please ?

It is easy to create an account if you do not have one, and you can then add any information for others.
