Unable to create a network printer, I keep getting a message:
Operation status report
Error: unexpected or missing characters in description. Did not create new printer.
Created a bug report for it:

Unable to create a network printer...

This issue does not appear to be an absolute block that prevents a new printer being added, but an issue with the description where it contains dashes (-) or dots (.).
Perhaps other characters may also cause problems ?
eg
These are NOT OK & create the error
Brief description: Officejet-Pro-8600
Brief description: Officejet.Pro.8600
These are OK with no errors
Brief description: Officejet Pro 8600
Brief description: officejet pro 8600
Also it seems to apply to sme7.6 & sme8.0
So a simple workaround would be to change the description to something acceptable

No disrespect Mary, but this should be resolved via the bug tracker. I know we are only talking about a descrption, but if something was allowed before and later changed, but was not detected during upgrade. sounds like a bug to me. 8-)

....this should be resolved via the bug tracker
My intention was not to resolve it here, just to inform others of the progress. The forum post makes "the problem" sound like printers cannot be added at all, which is not the case, so I just wanted to make that clear to other readers. The information I posted came from the bug report.
If regex code change is the issue, then it sounds like it may have crept in a few versions (of sme) ago.

Subject edited to reflect situation.

Understood Mary :-) and thanks Chris for making it clear. Since this is just a description issue, I have to wonder if this was changed in the code or the OP manually changed the db value sometime back. I don't think it would have an adverse effect, or not survive an upgrade, but as always best not to chance.
