I have to say that I make no claims for anybody else to remedy a similar a situation, I am simply telling my story and if it applies to somebody else then great. This morning I came into my server room and discovered my EMAIL server which runs on SME Server 7.6 had a broken mirror, will one of the worst mistakes I could of made since the email was working and functional at the time, I decided to reboot the server, DUMB DUMB AND MORE DUMB. Will as most of you know what happened next was that I ended up with a KERNEL PANIC - NOT SYNCING error message that would not fully boot up the server. There are way too many google hits on this issue to count and to begin with I tried some of the generic workarounds like trying a previous kernel, booting into rescue mode and trying my luck with mdadm and so and so forth. I sat there in production mode with a down email server and every bobbly head swinging by the server room asking when is it going to be fixed? Totally frustrated, I decided to take a chance, so what I did was I took at the broken harddrive out of the server, inserted SME Server 8.0 into the cd-rom and initiated an upgrade from 7.6 to 8.0. After only 15 minutes the upgrade was finished and a reboot commenced. After the reboot, the startup screen of all the processes in green lit up like the guiding light of angel, I WAS GASPING FOR AIR AT TOTAL DISBELIEF THAT THIS MIGHT FREAKING WORK. WILL LO AND BEHOLD, my server totally booted and corrected the missing harddrive and the email server was totally functional. I am still at shock since there are people who literally sit there for hours perhaps days trying to fix an issue like this and all I simply did was upgrade, literally I did jack squat to fix this issue, only thanks to a trusty copy of version 8. HOLY COW.....
