Title: SMTP multiple user authentication
Post by: ReetP on January 16, 2013, 03:38:03 PM
Hi,

We recently had an issue with our ISP (BT in the UK) changing their email over to Office 365 (Uuugghhhhhhhh), and their SMTP sending requirements.

We have been using the BT smarthost as despite our having a supposed 'Business account' with a static IP address, it is actually classed as 'residential' and gets blocked by a lot of spam lists.

Each user is now meant to authorise each mail they send with their own individual account details. (I believe this is different to POP before SMTP)

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of this, and if there are any methods to get round the situation e.g is there a way you can set the SMTP server to lookup the senders email and use their individual settings to authorise the sending of an email, rather than the 'generic' one ?

No. I suggest you change ISPs.

Failing that, I suggest you relay outbound SMTP via a different service provider.

Your only other choice is to disable the SMTP transparent proxy and have each individual user relay via Office 365 (i.e. Microsoft) - i.e. not use your SME server for email.

There is no system for synchronising passwords between your SME server and Office 365. You should have a system policy that users must have different passwords for the two networks.

Thanks Charlie - I figured that was the case but just wanted to be sure, and also reckon that there may be other BT users out there falling foul of the problem.
For a number of reasons I won't change from them, but I am moving away all of my services.
