Hi all,
Since this is my first post here, I would like to address a word to the creators and maintainers of SME.
- THANK YOU for doing such a great job, allowing us IT folk, and those that are in need of systems like this, and those are many, to use this to make our lives so much easier. I can't stress this enough: THANK YOU.
Now to the reason why i registered here : I have a problem setting up ejabberd.
As I understand, ejabberd is not in the repository of SME8 and we have to lend it from SME7. (according to here (http://"http://wiki.contribs.org/Ejabberd"))
I followed everything to the letter, but the jabber configuration panel that is supposed to pop up in the server-manager, just won't show up.
Now I am still a bit of a noob when it comes to SME and how things are exactly done since I am only using it for a few weeks now so it may be just something I need to poke that is not in the documentation.
Does anyone have any insight on this that he or she would like to share with me?
Thanks very much.
Richard.

hi, welcome here
please post the output of
rpm -qa | grep ejabberd
thank you
-
ejabberd-2.0.1-4.el4.sme
That is all i'm getting.
Thanks for helping me out, as i'm lost here. (I'm also used to UNIX and Debian based distro's, not RedHat )

so you have no smeserver-ejabberd package
setup sme7contribs repo following this wiki page:
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME8.0_Contribs_QA#Setup
then
yum --enablerepo sme7contribs install smeserver-ejabberd
after that, you can follow the ejabberd's wiki page from the
"sme configuration database update" step
-
Yeah ok. See? I'm an idiot :D
Thanks so much for helping me out here. It's much appreciated.
It works and I can continue configuring it.
Have a great day!

Ok, after I got the control panel working, there was so much wrong with ejabberd that I officially gave up on it.
The control panel on port 5280 just never started/became available, the user ejabberd/ejabberd never got created so i had to do that by hand, the home folder had issues, for some reason the server never started at the expected port etc etc.
Too much of a pain in the head for me, I will just install it on a seperate server and do port forwarding to it.
Automation is good, untill something goes wrong and you just can not figure out where it goes wrong :D
Thanks a bunch again for the help though.
Cheers.
Richard.

Hi,
and well done for posting in the first instance.
Automation is good, untill something goes wrong and you just can not figure out where it goes wrong :D
Unfortunately not all contributions have been updated to v8 yet. Some maintainers have done so, others no longer maintain theirs. There is one developer here who is working on trying to get outstanding ones moved and updated.
If you get a problem, the first place to look is in the bug tracker (http://bugs.contribs.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=jabber). If the installation still has a problem then you really need to post a bug so some of the developers and maintainers can look at fixing it. You can set up an account easily. We are trying to do some help guides for things like bugs, but if you have a read through some, you will get the style !
Don't expect instant answers though - everyone is a volunteer round here ! If you fancy trying to put a bit back into the distro (it doesn't build itself !), there are plenty of ways to help, whatever your level of expertise. Post on the lists and volunteer or join us on IRC at freenode #SME_Server.....
You may have noticed recently from the mailing lists (what do you mean, 'you don't read them' ???) that there are discussion about SME and the future. Please join in these as well. More info here http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,49441.0.html

Hi John,
Thanks for your reply.
Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining in any way. I just wanted to give a status update on how things went after. And well, explain why I had to abandon using ejabber for now.
I took OpenFire instead and worked brilliantly.
Because of time pressure, I had to forego on doing bug reports etc. Work has been and is immensely busy and is not looking like it will get better soon.
But rest assured, I will join in on this ride as I like SME and feel that I can contribute to it is a programmer/administrator, which I have been for 15 years.
Things just have to settle down a bit at work.
Cheers.
Richard.

No Worries !

No, thats good. Did you document what you did with OpenFire ? It is always worth noting what you did and you can create a wiki page with your efforts for the benefit of others.

Yup, we all get that ! It would be great if you can help in any way. Please contact any of us any time. Best is to come & chat on IRC but you can always make contact on the mailing lists. Your skills would be greatly appreciated and will go a long way to helping make SME the great distro that it is.
Looking forward to hearing from you !!!

The currently available ejabberd contrib through the sme7contribs repo will not work on SME8. It installs, but the config files and the issues above will make it fail to function properly.
The original author (JP-LC) has indicated that he has no time to update the contrib in the foreseeable future due to other priorities. Any takers to update the contrib? Especially when we are full throttle on SME9 ;-)
