Title: dyndns and mx records
Post by: Dean the hopeless on July 28, 2002, 06:02:58 PM
first of all thanks you to everyone who has helped out in my earlier questions here in these forums. I very much apprecriate the help given.

ok here is my next question:
I have registered a domain www.thebigsmell.com and then donated my money over at dyndns.org (money well spent) My domain is now working (YIPPIE!) but what I don't know is what enter in the MX records at dyndns.org site. I need to enter the host, which I would assume is mail.thebigsmell.com???? Then I need to enter the mail exchanger details. I have read the dyndns how-to's but have not really understood them. This should not suprise you too much, as it doesn't take to much to confuse me in my old age :-)

This may be my problem also and I claim old age as well!

I have my e-smith server running (only Linux machine i've ever built!  how great is this produce!!! :-)  and I can send mail OK, however if anyone tries to send it to us they get a mail failure (ie, cannot send for 5 days....)

I use www.no-ip.com for my dynamic DNS (also a great company) and i'm really not sure what the problem is.

Can anyone suggest where I might look to find a solution?

Bron
(and I also add a big thanks to those who help in these forums!  you guys are great!)

You don't need to enter anything in the mx records at dyndns.org providing that you are using the same ip address for your mail server as for your web server. If you just have the one SME machine then that is all you will need. I have the domain andyhouse.dyndns.org and I have no MX record entered and get email for this domain. A lot of people don't realise that you only need MX details to enter an ip address different to the main domain ip or to enter multiple mail server addresses to give fault tolerance. It does in fact explain this at dyndns.org in the FAQ. I think you will find your email is most likely working.Bron have you got the name of your domain or virtual domain set to the the domain name of your no-ip account. Also are you sure that the no ip addresss correctly reflects your ip address and not that of a proxy server. Can you access your web server externally. Give me some more info and I will see if I can help.

thanks for the info, it was spot on! Yes my mail is working, I don't need any mx records (I shouldn't have relieased that!) anyway I am able to send mail from my bigsmell.com account but I am unable to view any mail sent to me. I can send to bigsmell.com no problems.

Thanks for taking your time to help me

Does your mail server accept the mail. Have you got the domain set to bigsmell.com ? Not sure what you mean by saying that you can send mailto bigsmell but cannot read any of it.Dean the hopeless wrote:

I hope I can explain this.....

Here is the details of my machines hostname settings

Hostname: mail
Domain: thebigsmell.com
Location:  SelfLocalRemote
Local IP:  no entry
Ethernet address:  no entry

Publish globally?

Global IP:  box is ticked

Now on the dyndns.org site I have no mx records as I just have the one box hosting the www as well as mail ftp etc etc

I can go to my domain www.thebigsmell.com/webmail and send mail to anyone, people can send me mail to the thebigsmell.com account without it being bounced or anything like that, but when I check my inbox using the webmail there is still no mail. This is fine if I am only interested in sending mail but useless if I want to be able to read my mail :-)

Oh forgot to mention the thebigsmell.com is also a virtual domain

Thanks in advance for your help

I can't hit www.site.com/webmail at all ...

But I can send mail out and send/receive mail locally (ie, from local to local) but I can't receive mail from outside.

Any help on where I should look for information would be greatly appreciated.  Where are the machines hostname settings found?

Bron (and Dean you're not as hopeless as me! :)

I find that hard to believe :-)

you can found out about your machines hostnames by going to your server-manager http://www.yourdomain.com/server-manager and then clicking on the "hostnames and addresses"

You will then find information about all your virtual domains as well

can't believe I missed that...

Oh well, the news is that I can now receive eMail (not sure why I couldn't before), and can send it .. but I can't get to the http:///www.site.com/webmail.
