Hi all, I am very very new to Linux and E-smith. I have just recieved a ADSL USB modem to replace the current 56k. Does E-Smith Ver 5 support USB? or will have to go back to Microsoft.
-
Negative on the USB support. Some ADSL modems will do both (Ethernet/USB), if yours is USB only then you will have to go back to a Microsoft product.
Thanks,
Nathan

Or get a router that will talk to your usb adsl modem - see http://www.draytek.co.uk and http://www.bestsystemsdirect.com and check out the Draytek Vigor 2200 USB.
They're also popping up on Yahoo and Bay auctions.
I've got one and I'm fairly pleased with it.

I believe it can be done and there is some french sme google user groups that have set up the Alcatel ADSL USB modem. Smoothwall manage to succesfully arrange for this to work with their product so I think the problems would be similar with SME. I did try using the google translation utility to work out what to do but gave up whilst I still had my sanity. Interesting to read about the vigor router though as I have been looking for something like this.

I have created a tar file which contains a new console program to may it easy to configure an Alcatel ADSL USB modem. Mine has been running now for about 8 months without errors. This tar file was written for SME 5.1.2 but I am currently converting it for SME 5.5...... watch this space...
-
Hi Neil...any chance of getting hold of this program for 5.1.2? Tks, DaveA

Please let me know when you get that done for 5.5 Neil as that would be a very handy add on.
-
Have you converted your tar file to 5.5 yet and if so can you let us have a copy.
Has anyone tried using a internal adsl card, such as the Alcatel speedtouch PCI card yet. It looks like a good idea for small network with an IPS with single static IP address.service. Is there any reason why this should not work.
We have looked into using Alcatel 510, but have as yet not found a way of getting round the problem of needing one IP address for the router and another for the server.

I am looking for the driver files for the USB modem on SME 5.5.
Is there somewhere that i can download them ?
kind regards
Paul
