Title: SME Server becomes non responsive
Post by: CharlesKerr on January 31, 2013, 01:58:25 PM
Hi

I've been searching for the past couple of days with no luck. A clients SME 7.4 runs normally for anything between 4 minutes and 30 minutes after a reboot then "hangs" I am not able to log in locally or remotely. The server manager also stops responding.

I am still able to ping the machine with no problems.

I have been trying to do a yum update but no luck and I am tearing my hair out.

Any ideas.

Thanks
Charles

hi, welcome here

to update your server:
Code: [Select]
yum --enablerepo=smeupdates --disablerepo=* update smeserver-yum
signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot

then
Code: [Select]
yum --enablerepo=smecontribs update
signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot

but before doing so, answer this simple question: do you have a working backup?

to see what's going on on your server, reboot it, login as root and
Code: [Select]
tail -f /var/log/messages

you should also attach a monitor to your server and see what's happening

HTH

P.S. SME 7.4 is old, likely unsecure if exposed to wan and unsupported..

Thanks for for the quick reply
I have been able to update smeserver-yum but trying to do a complete update, the server hangs. /var/log/messages doesn't have any indication of anything strange. nor do any of the other logs. The only unusual things running are vmware (the server hangs after I kill the vmware processes as well) and radiusd?
I'm trying to check If I have a complete backup.
(the most difficult thing is the server is 600Km away and I'm only able to access via teamviewer!)

radiusd is not unusual.

First things I would do would be to 1) disable vmware and 2) do a memory test.

An old post, possible the issue resolved now, but things like this happen when the disk gets full. I had a server do similar when temporary backup files during routine backup jobs got cached to disk. Server still pinged, file access ground to a halt, couldn't log onto console. Customer just used to unceremoneously power cycle the box to fix... until they got sick of doing it every day!

Hi Axessit
Thanks for the info, I had to get them to courier the box to me. Looks like it was actually a faulty raid drive as I was able to do a backup after removing the drive, Did a clean install of SME 8 and sent it back. Everyone happy as an ISO audit was being done in a couple of days.
Cheers.
BTW Their redhat box that I set up has been running for 7 years without any major problems and this is the first problem the SME has had in 4 years!  and someone originally tried to sell them on a windows enterprise solution!! + for Linux
