Title: Am I doing a restore from workstation correctly?
Post by: henry44 on February 21, 2013, 05:43:48 AM
Hello,

I built a new server with a fresh install of SME version 8 and want to restore all the user and ibay data. I have been backing up to a workstation successfully, but can not seem to get the restore from workstation working. I made a short jing video that should explain what I am seeing.

Please let me know if this is a bug that needs to go the bug tracker or if this is operator error.

The backup share is NOT the relative location on your workstation drive eg you put C:\Backups
That location may be where the backup file is saved, but you need to create a windows networking share on your workstation, and use that name in the server manager panel
Depending what version of windows you are running, in Windows Explorer, right click on C:\Backups and select share, and create a share name eh Backups or something else.

Actually I would have thought you would already have specified that when you setup the original backup job, eg something like \\Backups or \\backupshare

Try using the sane setting you had in the backup job configuration, or create it again that & see how you go

The golden rule is to look in the log files on your sme server to see what is happening, or in your case it might show that a certain drive location cannot be found.
For starters look in the messages log file using server manager View log files option. You may need to look at other log files too, eg backup ones.

Here is what I see in the message log file.

Feb 20 22:53:15 larry-server kernel:  CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -6

The workstation is running Win7. I made a windows share labeled Backups. I tried \\Backups. Win7 told me the share name was \\MANCAVE\Backups so I tried this. Neither share name worked. I can access the restore destination from the workstation, so I know there should be a network path between them. I double checked the IP address of the workstation.

Here is a link to the properties window of the share I made.

Just use \\MANCAVE

Henry,

I have the backup up and running of 3 server and it works fine. I done done about 5 restores and they all worked fine (when I setup the restore correctly)

May I ask you a couple of question:

Is the win7 PC that you are trying to restore from the same one that you did you backups too?

If so then you do not have to do any thing to that PC you just have to enter the correct information into the SME backup section (as per your video)

If it is not the same machine how did the backup data get on it and why don't you use the old PC to do the restore.

My backup PC are running XP Pro but it should be the same for win7 - If you can backup to a PC then you can restore from it, BUT you must enter into the Backup section of your SME  the SAME information that was used on your previous SME. Fire up your old SME and see how it was setup.

I have just had quick on Google and it says: error code -6 means that the share path syntax isn't right

As you have the IP address entered then the next one should be Backup then the login name for the backup PC and the password.

Is the name of you folder Backup - with capital B? I may be old fashion but it always use lower case.
Is the user name and password correct?
Does that user have FULL permission for the Backup folder?

Hope this is some help, if not past back and I will give you my complete setup.

Thanks for your help.

The backups work fine. I am trying to restore from the same workstation to a different SME server.

You mentioned that the restore process works fine when you have the restore function configured correctly. Could you be more explicit about that part? When I click on "Restore from Workstation", I get a window that says "restoring form workstation across the top, but nothing else. Does it just take time to get going and I have been impatient?

I've fixed my issues and the restore from workstation process works now. Thank you all for your suggestions and help. The problem was with permissions on the windows share not being set correctly.

Henry,

Glad you got it working
