I'm working on contrib for moving them to the sme8's smecontrib repository, and for one of them i need to work with Windows software.

the contrib is there (http://wiki.contribs.org/OpenOffice_for_Windows) but it is not the purpose of this topic.
Effectively i can reach a smeserver domain with windows XP but i can not connect with windows 7. Of course i use same settings than for windows XP
I have looked a bit on this purpose....if you can illuminate the solution it could be nice.
I'm not really aware about microsoft, i prefer to waste my time with SME than "windaube" 8)

Registry tweaks are included in SME http://your-sme-ip/server-resources/regedit/ (http://your-sme-ip/server-resources/regedit/).
Working for both 7&8; the only "issue" is that after join-setup you cannot immediately add a user but you must reboot once your PC.

About the contrib OO: maybe interesting to move to Libroffice or at least have it suitable for both OO & LO. I've abandoned OO since the beginning of LO adventure and I really found many benefits.

i have seen this url on an other topic, but it seems to me that i get a 404 error or maybe a 403 i didn't remember well

Ok as i said before...i'm not really good with windows and you know what...i'm proud of that :p
So keep in mind that windows is a feckin O.S and the behavior of firefox under Linux is not the same in windows.....and thus i have set the url http://your-sme-ip/server-resources/regedit/ firefox goes to http://www.server-ressources/regedit.
I tested the same url with firefox and linux, and the results was different because I have exactly the url of regedit keys....be aware of that.
so after that you need to save the key win7samba.reg somewhere in your W7 tree folder and start "regedit" by the start menu of you W7.
Then you can open the menu file/import and look to "all files" and apply with your "win7samba.reg"
once you have applied this file you can try to log to the (Koozali) SME Server.
That's all folks.....what i don't understand it is why there are not a wiki page on this subject....i will do it :p

Many thanks; I'll only make some modification (reorganization) to the howto not to be confusing (or to be more explicit), considering that the howto was created to for Sernet Samba (support for 7 on Sme 7).

my thought was to say that too much page on the wiki might not be easy to find the information, but you are free to enhance, to modify and to make a new page.
this is the power of wiki :p

Good; the last effort: revise this:
Although an upstream fix was made available for SME 8 beta (based on CentOS 5, see bug 5425 (http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5425)), there is no comparable fix available from the upstream vendor for SME 7.x (based on CentOS 4).
We're no more in beta ! :-D

While not an SME Server specific issue, I found the following post useful for my Win 7 clients:

Changing the referenced group policy removes an additional 30 seconds to login time for my Win7Pro and Svr2008 (not R2) clients. I seem to recall this happening with Vista as well, but thankfully I don't have Vista PCs anymore, so I can't confirm. I'm not using roaming profiles at all, but the delay still occurs. Perhaps the remote home directory is a factor? Also, I'm not using SerNet. Regarding the note regarding "version 2 profiles", are they only a factor if roaming profiles is enabled? I have a few logins used from both Win 7 and XP workstations, but no apparent issues.
Would this be something worth adding to the HowTo?

My bad, didn't think to look in bugzilla as it seemed to be a general samba issue, not SME specific. When I searched samba forums in the past I only found the GPO fix and not the registry one. That said, I feel this is the kind of thing that needs to be noted in a wiki, as the registry update doesn't do much sitting there unless the admin knows to apply it again.

It seems this may not be a supported action by the head honchos. It has been drilled in my head by my mentors (CharlieBrady, Stephono, Mary, Burnat?) that you should never use the repository SME-Testing. If it has not been rolled out into the standard updates, it is for developemnt purposes only.
Is this method accepted?
If so, why hasn't the change been rolled into proper updates?
I have a production system, and I fear messing it up by human error. However, I have extremely slow logins, and would like that resolved.
As for now, the latest update is only
e-smith-samba noarch 2.2.0-53.el5.sme smeupdates 101 knot the -54.el5 you are requesting

We have many W7 users connecting to SME8 domain & fortunately not had any slow logins but I've always amended the client registry as per the instructions in the 'Windows 7 Performance and Time Registry settings ' section here https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Windows7 (https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Windows7) To date I haven't adjusted anything on the server.

How do you implement that change? It just states that the settings were shared.

All the package does is modify a .reg file stored on the server. The .reg file is run by the client PC, merging the changes into the windows registry. Honestly, the wiki shows you the content of the file, so running the package isn't really necessary. Just create a text file, paste in the registry data from the wiki, rename the extension to .reg, at the client double-click on the .reg and merge it into the registry. The last line of the .reg fixes the slow login issue. If this is confusing, you really should become familiar with registry .reg file. Hope this helps.

"DNSNameResolutionRequired"=dword:00000000
"DomainCompatibilityMode"=dword:00000001
To make further changes to the registry you need to navigate through the directory tree to find the correct key (be careful as many key locations look the same with only very minor differences). For instance, to add these values:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System]
"SlowLinkDetectEnabled"=dword:00000000
"DeleteRoamingCache"=dword:00000001
"WaitForNetwork"=dword:00000000
"CompatibleRUPSecurity"=dword:00000001you navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System' in the directory tree and with 'system' highlighted in the tree, right click on it and select 'new/DWORD (32-bit) value'. You then copy the 'SlowLinkDetectEnabled' text into the name field and enter zero in the value data field. Repeat for the other 3 values in the above list.

I'm only offering my personal experience in case it helps. As I said before I've not made any changes to the server, it's running vanilla SME 8, the updates testing repository is disabled.

if you are anxious you can wait some time and the new version of the package will comes without efforts.
by the way it is not sme-testing but smeupdates-testing, so the repository before smeupdates repo.

Applied old .reg (from server) to Win7pro workstation, joined it to samba domain. After merging the updated .reg (created manual) to client registry, login time dropped by 25sec. Only difference was the last line of the .reg file. So, running the test package is apparently unnecessary. Did I miss something?

It seems to me that the new .reg needs to be activated in case of slow login (by a db command). Effectively if you read the bug report mostly of us do not need this trick so it is not activated by default.
However i'm not the best to speak about windows i'm just a man who reads bug reports against documentation and makes what he can to solve them.
