How did you set it up ? Following a wiki page ? this one: http://wiki.contribs.org/ShadowCopy ?

I tried it some time ago... but it was taking much space (making a whole copy of ibay) so I left it just on one small ibay. How much space it takes to you ?

If I remember correctly the correct way to recover is to right-click the file and go to the "previous version" tab where all previous versions will show up.

hi
yes it does take some space but i need it .
the folder .shadow is in my home/e-smith/files folder and i didn't understand how to "restore from previous" from there .
also now in every ibay i have a short cut "@GMT-2013.05.13-20.43.13"  to the shadow copy folder of the ibay .
from windows explorer i can see only the ibays but not the shadow copy folder, and if i click right mouse and then "restore from privios" the list is empty and i need it to show the previos files.
i still didn't understend how to do it .

Do you right click the FILE and see no "previous version" tab ?

right click ? where ?
1. how does windows explorer will know where is the shadows copy files are ? if they are in the server and on a hidden folder' this is what i don't understand.

the server creates the shadows files in /home/e-smith/files/.shadows,  how do i continue from there ?
please can someone explain to me step by step how to restore the files ?

AFAIK the ShadowCopy works for files , so you can find old versions of files.
You should right-click any file to see the older versions of it.

and, please, read here:

https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/VFS.html#id2651694

it seems to me that there's no way to recover files from the shell

The shadow copy function just taps into the Windows feature, and you should "just see" the old versions of files.
You best describe what version Windows you are using, how your workstations are connected to the LAN (workgroup only or DOMAIN members), what other servers are on the LAN etc.

Have you tried on other versions of Windows, and what are the results.

I have not used this function for a few years, last back in the days of Windows XP and it worked OK then.

So maybe your problem is to do with Windows rather than sme server.
Please provide more details for analysis.
