Hi everybody
In install sme server 8 last week. no problems about windows xp client (roaming profiles and logon drive).
When i add a windows 7 client to my domain, it's ok about roaming profiles but i can't see the logon drive. why?
what's wrong.
I've just installed the win7samba.reg but nothing new.
help pls.

tastiero
The profiles are different, Vista & later use v2 profiles.
Maybe your issue is related to that as you are using roaming profiles, & you need to configure the v2 Vista profiles seperately to the older XP profiles.
Google it, as there are many articles about this, here is one:

I read about it on google search. In sme server 7 there was something about 11logonDrive files and 22logonDrive files, pratically the difference for xp and win7.
when i search in my sme server 8 i find only this:
[root@pdctlc smb.conf]# ls -la

how can i add files to support win 7 clients?
-
tastiero
Your question is not clear. Please be more precise.
When you say:
"When i add a windows 7 client to my domain.........i can't see the logon drive. why?"
Are you referring to the users home drive ?
Are you referring to drive Z: ?
Commonly in SME server in the netlogon.bat file that runs when Windows starts, we specify the home drive as H: using
net use H: /home
Look in /home/e-smith/files/samba/netlogon/netlogon.bat
IIRC save any changes to this file in Windows format ie use Notepad to edit & upload the file to your server
Also see

sorry
I'm refering to drive z: that i easly reach in windows xp client but i can't view in win 7 client.

Did you configure the netlogon.bat file appropriately.
Do you see a H: drive ?
-
ok my fault
now it works.
but i can't understand the difference, why i don't need to change netlogon.bat for windows xp?
thanks for help
-
please can you explain exactly what you have modified to be added to this howto http://wiki.contribs.org/Windows_7_Support
thank tastiero

I think he is referring to the automatically mapped home drive in Windows XP. This doesn't show in Windows 7 without editing the netlogon.bat file.

Thanks newburns, I understand but i want to documented it in the appropriate wiki page...i'm really not good with windows environment however this ought to be in the good section. So I'd to know exactly what we have to modify to get a netlogon.bat workable on window7 and after that test it for windows 8.
tastiero, it is your turn

Here is my netlogon.bat
REM To set the time when clients logon to the domain:
net time \\servername /set /yes
REM
REM To map a home directory to drive h:
net use z: /home
But is this the standard setup? I did it before, but I just remembered I did a AFFA --rise-all recently, so I don't know if this file carried over, or is part of the new install
Last time I did this file, I had to end it with
unix2dos /home/e-smith/files/samba/netlogon/netlogon.bat
-
i confirm that your file is the standard, i have the same in my server
-
I confirm,
i'm referring to the automatically mapped home drive in Windows XP. the above drive doesn't show in Windows 7 without editing the netlogon.bat file.
i've deleted the REM in the line about "net use z: /home" and then it's ok.
Now it works fine.
Thanks to all for the help. i'm trying sme server 8 since few months.

This behaviour is a known issue or it is an issue only for tastiero, if somebody can give his feedback on netlogon problem, i'm quite a newbees on windows. I do not have a W7 or a W8 to play with it as i'm in holiday, a little far from my virtualisation server, but i write this on my Todo List when i come back at home.
Tastiero, don't be affraid to ask a wiki edit right, a bugzilla account, to help the project with some dollars, what the SME Project gives to you, try to give back by your own way.

I'm not afraid about it. i use windows and linux operanting system and i believe that's problems makes us more expert :)
i want to add another thing.
in the smb.conf file the default logon drive is Z: and in the netlogon.bat the default drive is H:.
to avoid to have two drive about the same phisical drive (Z: and H:), we need to change the two configuration file with the same drive letter (Z: or H:).
thanks to everybody

Tastiero i believe that you ought to raise a bug and to speak of this in bugzilla, you can after that give here the url of your bug on your topic.
I'm not enough good to give advices on windows but It is a strong reality that SME Server must operate with this O.S
If something has to be modified in the documentation, a bug will be cloned to the documentation Team

Right, i think that in the http://wiki.contribs.org/Windows_7_Support the editors must add the wiki about my experience.
1)add win7samba.reg to win7 registry;
2)modify /home/e-smith/files/samba/netlogon/netlogon.bat (same drive letter of smb.conf)
3)modify /etc/samba/smb.conf (same drive letter of netlogon.bat)
if you know how i can help the wiki, pls let me know
thanks

As you can see you are speaking to modify some core system of SME Server, so i prefer that a bug is created so after we can modified in the core system of SME to adjust the WIN7 behaviour as a standard process.....go ahead please.
If you want to be in the adventure of this open source project you are welcome Tastiero, as it is our works that it gives SME better we needs a lot of people involved....but in first keep in mind that all we want it's Fun :D
see this topic i have commented http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,50027.msg250853.html#msg250853 and this http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Volunteering

ok thank you :-P

IIRC ,Windows (XP at least) default is to create a Z: drive for the special home folder.
If you prefer to use the sme server default of H: drive, then you can delete the Z: drive by putting the following as the last line in your netlogon.bat file
net use /delete Z: /yes
Or maybe you prefer it vice versa
-
thanks Janet
i'm new and testing sme server for my office.
-
effectively we can find this in the documentation
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter7
-
right it's not a bug.
i have to read docs about join to domain.
thank for the help

In case it helps, you could consider the smeserver-loginscript contrib. I use it with XP and W7 clients on SME7 and SME8 servers and find it very useful. It gives you a new link on the server-manager page where you set the letter to map the home drive to and configure the drive mappings according to users, groups etc. You don't need to modify any files manually. If you're interested you can download the contrib from here:
http://www.sme-server.de/download/sme7/contribs/smeserver-loginscript-0.2-8.noarch.rpm (http://www.sme-server.de/download/sme7/contribs/smeserver-loginscript-0.2-8.noarch.rpm)
