Title: Various command errors adding HDD
Post by: shano on July 10, 2013, 05:00:14 AM
Hi all. 8 year user first time poster.

I have been using 8.X now for a few months and as the system is now all new hardware (No more P3 600EB) I would like to integrate the server into my network more.

The system has been installed 64bit on a 120GB SSD, Intel i3.

I have tried to add a 4TB WD Black and symlinking an ibay for network shares, workstation backups and various other things.

following http://wiki.contribs.org/AddExtraHardDisk there are a few errors and missing commands???

So no raid. Just a stand alone disk.

I knew the disk had to be GPT. So initialized the disk in win7 as a GPT disk with no format.

Put the disk in the system and proceeded and realized fdisk cant format this drive. Not knowing how to install or use Parted I put the disk back into the win7 pc and formatted it ext3.

Put the drive back into SME and proceeded with the instructions.

smartctl -i /dev/hda or hdc - failed no such device. for some reason my system sees the hdds as sd not hd. EG I already have sda1 and sda2 now trying to install sdb / sdb1.
So my command is smartctl -i /dev/sdb

"Device is:" got my attention but my main disk has the same response so left it alone.

mkfs.ext3 /dev/hdc1
my command mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb1 could not stat /dev/sdb1 --- no such file or directory

tried mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb Is entire device, Not just one partition! proceed anyway "y"
Writes 29809 inode tables

mkdir /mnt/newdisk

didnt get a confirmation so typed it again to see if i got an error
mkdir /mnt/newdisk got an error saying file already exists

pico /etc/fstab command not found

cant mount it???

pico is no longer available in SME8

use nano

# nano /etc/fstab

and I prefer the laternatiove methods shown at Mapping Alternatives, in particular Alternative 2: Mounting a specific ibay or user

Thanks. I'll try that.

Is this hd and sd thing normal or is there another issue.

So the drive appears fine just needs to be mounted?

No worries..

Not a problem as such but something to be awatre of, see HERE (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,49438.msg247008.html#msg247008) and HERE (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,49536.msg247651.html#msg247651) for a couple of many discussions re this issue

Yep...pick your method and go with it.

@shano: I believed that it is a known fact that we can't use hard disks larger than 2TB with SME for certain reasons that you have started to see, but it is really interesting to watch your work and we have to document it in the wiki if you can get some good results. So post here the result please and above all the exact way you have proceeded to be written in the wiki.

@Terry: the howTo which shano refers seems out of date notably because it refers to hda/hdb/hdc.
Some mentions should be given on how your disk is called when you are on a sata Disk.....what do you think Terry ?

Maybe just a coverall statement in early pages of manual or those sections dealing with raid, adding hds etc, that depending on your system (ATA) and hard drive, hard drives will be labeled hdx or sdx, older motherboards and drives seem to be problamatic. Newer stuff doesn't seem to have an issue. BIOS settings also play a part.

I have added a note box, but with less things that you have proposed Terry, feel free to add more stuff
