Title: Bad Hard Drive?
Post by: gisuno68 on August 16, 2013, 03:23:34 AM
I had a SME 6.01 server running that the drive went bad. When I boot the server I get "error 5 mounting ext3"  & "no init found".  Most of the data is backed up there was one folder that we would like to retrieve I tried to mount the drive using Ubuntu and Windows with not luck. Any ideas?

Test the drive with the drive manufacturers diagnostic software, or downlaod the UBCD Ultimate Boot CD), it has a lot of test software on it.

Trying booting to the sme server install CD & select Rescue mode. If the drive is faulty you may not be able to retrieve anything from it.

You had an SME 6.01 server running long, long after that software was obsolete and out of maintenance.

If you are very lucky some of your old data might be readable in rescue mode, but otherwise you are in the hands of whatever gods you believe in, and data recovery specialists.

did you try this howto (method A)

I suppose that SME V6 is made with LVM and it is for this that you can not read data directly with ubuntu and even windows.
