HI SME vs 8- all updates installed.
Had some problems with internet access to certain websites- uninstalled Dansguardian before finding that the cause was a faulty modem. I reinstalled Dansguardian and the contrib doesnt seem to be filtering.
Here is the error when trying to start the dansguardian service:
login as: root
root@192.168.1.254's password:
Last login: Thu Aug 29 23:38:22 2013 from 119.224.37.248
[root@server ~]# service dansguardian start Starting dansguardian: [ FAILED ]
[root@server ~]# /etc/init.d/dansguardian restart
Shutting down dansguardian: [ FAILED ]
Starting dansguardian: [ FAILED ]
[root@server ~]# /etc/init.d/dansguardian start
Starting dansguardian: [ FAILED ]
[root@server ~]#
I am able to configure the config files but cannot the start the service.
The web interface advises that the server needed to be reconfigured after the software install but cannot clear the notice. Ive rebooted numerous times.
Its seems that the squid-guard proxy service is also not running??. I tried another contrib "webfilter". That service is not filtering the content either.
How can I resolve the problem?

Rebooting is not sufficient.
You need to do
signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot
Then try again & see if you still have problems.
-
HI Janet- sorry reboot was not the correct term- I've run the following commands
signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot
numerous times to make sure all services are updated and running at reboot.- still not able to resolve the issue or get Dansguardian service running.
After restart Server-manager through web browser still displays: Warning: a reconfigure and reboot is required before proceeding! Failure to do so now may leave your system in an unknown state!
As before, Is there a way to check that squid-guard is running. and if not why?
Thanks :)

Do
signal-event console-save
signal-event reboot
and then see what happens
-
Janet, i ran the command. The machine restarted and the message is still displayed in the browser server-manager. Warning: a reconfigure and reboot is required before proceeding! Failure to do so now may leave your system in an unknown state!
Some Changes though... I installed the "webfilter" contrib and it seems to be working. Its filtering content. So I removed that and dansguardian seems to be filtering content?? ...but not displaying the standard warning html page- it displays the following:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /squidGuard/cgi-bin/blocked.cgi on this server.
Could the problem be with the Dansguardian package?. Suffice to say its doing its job, though not fully. Maybe I need to re-install the package?? I will revisit this later when i have more time.
Thanks all the same.

It seems you have various issues happening, so let's fix them one at a time.
You don't have permission to access /squidGuard/cgi-bin/blocked.cgi on this server.
From
http://wiki.contribs.org/WebFiltering#Denied_page
it appears you customised the error page but did not remove that db setting when you removed the webfiltering contrib.
Show output of
config show squidguard
& for interest
config show squid
config show dansguardian
A comment. Rather than jumping from contrib to contrib trying to get something to work & doing this in an experimental way, you should just install the one contrib (eg dansguardian) & work through getting it working correctly & troubleshooting your installation. By switching between similar contribs you are only complicating the process & making it more difficult for yourself & more difficult for others to help you.
Please just focus or concentrate on getting one contrib installed & working (ie dansguardian).
You need to be more careful re what you are doing.

I would do
config delete squidguard
Also did you follow all the squidguard removal instructions here
http://wiki.contribs.org/WebFiltering#Uninstall
Please repeat those
Then follow all the above with
signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot

Hi Janet- apologies for the late reply- i was able to resolve the issue regarding the dansguardian service- the hardware needed to be manually powered down...
command line initiated reconfig or reboot wasn't doing it. after I did the manual power down and reboot- everything was up and running.
Kind Regards...
