i think so but you have to install a contrib https://wiki.contribs.org/UserManager and allow a user to access to the pseudonym panel
May be the user allowed can change all pseudonym of server, you should test

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I tried that!
Yes, the user has access to all pseudonyms of the server :)

it is  an administrative task to manage pseudonyms, therefore you need to trust in your user.

If that was the case, I agree with you.

But I meant for example an end-user that has only an email account on the server.
To be able to add an alias or two for his own account, without the need to request it from an admin.

Of course but you can take the risk that his pseudonym will be paypal@smedomaine.com and he attempts to earn money on internet.

Kidlike

SME Server is designed for a specific deployment role as a server.
It does not by default have all functions that a high end mail system application would have.

It sounds to me like you want users to be able to add aliases to their "account" somewhat like yahoo & other free mail systems.
For that you really need to install an appropriate application or contrib eg CMS system or Joomla or egroupware or a more specific public mail system web application.
Users would login to that & be able to do what the app allows etc.

The web server in sme uses Apache so it will run most available web software.
Also take a look at the Contribs section, something there may suit your needs.

Otherwise if just using sme server "as is", then you need administrative user access, and it is a BAD idea to give that to all end users (for many reasons).

There is a default alias system based on existing user names.
Users can nominate "one off" or "on the fly" aliases of the form
user-anything@domain.com
Messages sent to these addresses will be delivered to user@domain.com
They do not need to be created by an administrator or a user. SME server is designed for this to work without needing any setup.
eg
john@domain.com
can advise someone his address is
john-hobby@domain.com
& tell someone else his address is
john-telstra@domain.com
& so on
All messages sent to any address will be delivered to
john@domain.com

Of course this will only happen when there is no other user account, pseudonym or group already created that uses the same alias name.

Neat hey !

Thanks everyone !

Janet, that is a nice feature to know..

I agree that it is unwise for the user to be able to create an alias on his own.

Unfortunately anything with telstra in its address will take five times as long to be delivered, just the way the name rolls..LOL..an Antipodean joke
