Title: Certificates, Windows & Outlook 2010 and loss of hair!
Post by: Drifting on November 11, 2013, 09:07:08 PM
I wonder if any of you have experience with Windows 7, Outlook 2010, as for the life of me I cannot get it to accept the certificate. Problem is this server was called "05.companyname.local", instead of "mail.companyname.com"  so the cert has that as the name. Changing the name of the server is not something I would take on lightly, only because I have never tried it.(But willing to if that was the answer)

I have googled like mad, but not found anything specific that stated how to make this work, certificate is installed but still get this error:-

The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website address.

Which is fair enough as it is. But is there a way round this? Would purchasing a certificate help? I assumed it would not as the domain was set to domain.local so could not use a wildcard one? Really confused by this, at least Firefox allowed me to force it and work well with Thunderbird. Sadly I need it to work with Outlook due to my accounts software.

Paul.

Hi there,

I had the same issue on one of my clients' server.  Changing the name of the server is not a big issue on SME unlike MS.  Buying a third party certificate is not going to resolve the issue.  What I found helpful is to edit the hosts file on Win7 and add the IP of the SME box (eg. 192.168.0.1 mail.company.com 05.company.com).
In outlook then use the server name (whichever you want to use) and accept the certificate.  Also try to install a certificate from IE and place it into the "Trusted Root Certification Authority"

Hope this helps

Thanks.

Will try the host entry and see what happens. I have already got the certificate in the right location, I checked with MMC/certificate and there it was. Was not until I actually bothered to read the error message that I saw the reason for the rejection. Desperate now to sort this, my Mrs want to send out invoices, and can only use Outlook, mutters.....

Hi Paul,

Give it a go and let us know...as I said, changing the name from 05 to mail.company.com is not an issue and can be safely done...
