Title: Windows 7 can only join Samba Domain with "dot" name
Post by: linuxhelp on November 25, 2013, 05:51:38 PM
Hello@ALL,

after some time i was forced to setup Win7 Clients to work with Samba3.6 (SME8)

the clients can only join the domain name with "dot" like "home.net" but not "home"

is that a known bug? i set all clients into dns of the SME-Server PDC like client1.home.net

Do i make mistakes?

smbclient -L //serverpdc -U admin runs well
and joining is successfull on home.net but never on "home"

Error Message the Client cant be added cause the Machine Name was installed by a other username??

Yes i did rejoin the clients, but cleanup db accounts,smbpasswd-DB,groups and passwd (deleted Machine (client1$) Accounts successful)

any ideas, lost my last hairs..

"home" is not a correct domain name.

Please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name

MS is always trying to 'steal' a (de facto) industry standard and make it 'MS Unique'. Please follow industry standards. Same applies for LDAP vs MS-AD.

Hello,

thanks for reply, yes i agree, should the howtos not be updated?
i have often seen Workgroup Names without "dot" (Screenshots of SME-Server-Manager)
and on some TechNET Sites i read articles about Workgroupnames with "dot"
described as old "NT4" Format.

I changed all successful..
if anyone need help he can post here or contact me..
Thanks to All here..
