As a daring person i would like to upgrade my production server to 8.1 b - some of the new features in the backup part are very useful for my purposes. And there seem to be very few bugs in the beta.
How do i accomplish this? Is it by
yum update enablerepo=sme-testing
?
And what about the further upgrade paths? Next for my little biz would be 9.0 64bit together with a new HP microserver. Which would mean a completely new installation with restore from 8.1 b - right?

The most reliable way is to do a CD upgrade from a downloaded iso.
See
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,50525.0.html
You can download SME Server 8.1 from
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/releases/testing/8/iso/i386/
or for other methods see http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server_8
The Upgrade path from sme8 to sme9 at present is via:
backup sme8
install new sme9 OS
restore from backup
install contribs.
