Title: NethServer??
Post by: ElFroggio on January 18, 2014, 09:57:12 PM
Hi,

I just heard of NethServer. Sounds almost familiar. http://nethserver.nethesis.it/ (http://nethserver.nethesis.it/)

Is there any connection to SME?

Thanks

Syv

I was curious , so I click on link you sent and on front page I can read:

Open Source
NethServer is a Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) oriented Linux distribution derived from SME Server. It's CentOS based.

Any doubts ?

...and they want to (or wanted to) merge with contribs.org/koozali, but folks around here did not like the way Neth was implemented etc (for good technical reasons), but it seems Neth are reluctant to re-write major sections of code etc in a way that will suit contribs.org/koozali developers.
There are a probably a lot of logistical issues to resolve as well, repos, contribs, support etc etc, and which "attitude" or "design concept(s)" would predominate or be followed.

So the sme9 project was started by contribs.org & now we have the name koozali & a new board to carry it into the future.

I did see a recent post by someone from Neth saying they were interested to change code(?) etc, so that they & contribs could merge, but I have seen or heard nothing more come from that.
Whether there is chat going in in the background with the koozali board, I do not know.
It was suggested that Neth speak to the board with their new proposal & changed attitude or approach.

stephdl, I think you are on or associated with the koozali board, have you heard anything from Neth about this revised attitude ?

Edit: I found the thread.
See particularly the last page of posts in this thread

nope no contacts yet i have heard, but sincerely day after day the gap is higher to merge the two products...I have seen, tested, read a bit of code, but the things which lack to this product are the improvement of sme, the documentation, and the community to develop contribs or to help in the forum.

However Rome wasn't made in one day and i love the creativity and the braveness of these men, so it needs time. Nevertheless i'm still thinking that the fact of sharing the community is not good.

I agree that sharing people (ie splitting up people to one distro or the other, SME or Neth), will be divisive & counter productive to both distros.
The sharing of resources & infrastructure etc would be possible, but really the Neth developers would have to change their design concepts greatly to fit in with current SME developers concepts & existing infrastructure & processes, which are quite specific & advanced technically.
I doubt that SME developers will change their stance significantly, so it will be up to Neth to make the big change, if the two distros are to merge or share common elements.
Is that likely ?
Probably not in my opinion & observations, it is really up to the Neth people to decide if they want to continue "going it alone".
I think the contribs.org/koozali developers & team members have stated their intent pretty clearly, to continue developing SME "as is".

Hi Syv,
you can read here about our proposal:
http://lists.contribs.org/pipermail/devinfo/2013-January/011165.html

But a lot of things are changed since that post, see this:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/nethserver/FZFISuldan4

Here you can find a comparative:
http://www.nethserver.org/index.php?id=development_features_nethserver-sme-server

If you want, you can partecipate through mailing list, #nethserver IRC channel, phone, etc
We are open to discuss, see our mailing list for examples.
Ciao,
Alessio

What would be good is if these forums were not used as a publicity site for other disributions regardless if they derived from SME etc..just my personal opinion of course..
