Title: Map location of servers.
Post by: ajkeane on March 03, 2014, 09:05:40 AM
Hi All

We would like to start mapping the locations of server installs so that we can show this on the website. If you would like to participate and have your server shown on the map please reply to this post with the town and country where the server is.

Thanks

Tony

Between myself & a couple of associates we have around 45 servers in Perth, Western Australia, that we have installed and/or maintain. I myself have around 20.  These are a mix of SME7.x & 8.x

This map could be used to show the consultant details via linking to the published consultant page(s); consultants would pay to be on this page & this could be a subscription type thing to help generate a bit more revenue for the distro .. the pin on the map could show the number of servers the consultant has under their wing.

Further, when an SME is built it could register with a Koozali server using the consultant ID so maintaining this is automated.  Server would call home once a month, if it doesn't call home the count is decremented.

Smeghead

All great suggestions and something we will work on doing. At the moment I have only been gathering the town, country and number of installs for each user.

I am happy to start collating other information and to look at including that in the pop ups if people want to supply it to me.

Thanks

tony

I suggest getting smolt (or similar) functioning again to collect counts of each server installed.

smolt is a dead project and no longer workable for centos6, indeed it will nice to have something like that.
This should be a bug raised

Is there a central log somewhere when there's software or clamav updates? If so can a map be generated from that?

Shad has made an interactive map :)

Quote
Here is a map of locations that have at least 10 installs.  An install is counted if it was around for at least 1 month.

I like it, very impressive, and should be a great selling tool. Can't see mine either but understating the count makes it all the more impressive.

see the discussion info. Shad has not given more details yet, but i think that every SME Server Ping the Contribs cluster every month.
Probably the external ip is used to make the map and it seems that you need almost 10 SME to get a flag on the Map.

So if you have several SME on the same external ip, maybe it could explain why you can't see your servers.

well i'm not really convinced, you are probably right but i believe that smolt is no longer active at contribs. Only shad can answer.

I believe contribs.org have their own smolt server and are actively collecting data. Please Internet test at the console terminal app

I think the smolt server stopped working a couple years ago.  At least, when I run the smolt checkin manually I get an error, and
Code: [Select]
/usr/bin/smoltSendProfile -c
Error contacting Server: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 503: Service Temporarily Unavailable
Could not send - Exiting

The contribs smolt server stopped working in 2011, as far as I can tell: Bug 6639 (http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6639).

jameswilson & all

I believe ajkeane announced in the mailing lists that he would not pursue the collection of this data, as Shad had provided a map with much more data on it
http://batchgeo.com/map/e875e05b857ef93f1ad61ea1e3324fc2

AFAICT Shad is not getting data from smolt, but is getting it from the initial console test to contribs.org (upon first set up or later retesting) & possibly also during subsequent yum update events.
