hi
I know this off topic of SME,
Yes i know XP has been killed off.
Yes i still have many clients that use XP with MSE as their AV.
Today we got flooded with calls about these computers that crashed, and all roughly at the same time.
I have removed MSE and they seem to re-boot without problems.
I was figuring that MSE without being updated might at least offer some protection.
So my question if any of you are still running any XP machines, what free, non resource hogging AV are you using?
I am heading in the direct of Clamwin.
thanks
john

use Clamwin, as you already said..

May I suggest Avast offers a bit more than Clamwin or Avira its also very good and a little lighter on the resources than Avast

I would agree, but it depends on ram/cpu of clients.. either Avast or Avira are too heavy for a 1Gb ram pc in my experience..

No worries Stefano, my issue with clamwin is it does not provide real time protection, Malwarebytes is just about the best as far is that class of antiviral app goes just my opinion of course :-)

I don't think that MSE by itself is causing your problems. I have not yet finished updating my windows xp users, but none of my xp users had problems yesterday (XP SP3 / MSE) like the one you describe.

@hawk, good day! please make sure you update all remaining available patch from microsoft for your winXp machines. Then install Malwarebytes v2 (https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/) update & make a full scan each workstations. you may use Panda Cloud Antivirus Beta2 2.9 (http://www.cloudantivirus.com/forum/ann.jspa?annID=50332) or Immunet Free (http://www.immunet.com/free/index.html) (please enable offline protection using ClamWin on settings) as alternative anti-malware protection each workstation. both are lightweight resource for your hardware. 8-)
