Title: PPOE setup question - SME5.1.2
Post by: MarkW on August 13, 2002, 02:58:49 AM
I've looked at the manual, but am unclear on a couple of PPOE connection issues.

Must I use a router with a ADSL connection (static IP)?  What I would like to do is connect eth1 directly to the Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5360 modem.  The provider uses PPOE to assign the static IP, and I have the user name and password.  However, when configuring SME 5.1.2, the connection never comes up and the "Test Internet Access" option on the admin console fails.

Thank you for any hints or info.

Mark

Have a look at the manual for the 5360 and see if you can set it up in bridged mode then just configure the external interface (eth1) on e-smith as a static IP (don't use PPOE). I've setup a few static DSL connections and I don't use a router (except for e-smith). You'll must use the DSL modem though, which ever way you go.

Lloyd, thanks for the suggestion.  After spending several hours screwing around, I finally replaced the AMD based network.  It came up perfectly, in PPOE mode.

Thanks again,
Mark
