On a SME 5.5 installation I have added two printers to the server, one to the parallel port and one to the USB-port. In Windows XP both of them show up with status: Access denied, unable to connect. The USB-printer (Epson 740) works anyhow, but the lp0-printer (HP Laserjet 5P) does not react at all. I have checked for hardware-errors.
The boot.log says:
aug 13 16:46:45 eng8-server lpd: Starter lpd:
aug 13 16:46:45 eng8-server lpd: Warning - epson740: cannot open lp device '/dev/usb/lp0' - Ingen sådan enhed [= No such unit]
aug 13 16:46:46 eng8-server lpd: Warning - hplj5p: cannot open lp device '/dev/lp0' - Ingen sådan enhed
aug 13 16:46:46 eng8-server lpd: lpd opstart succeeded
Can anyone give me a clue?

I posted this to link Brian referenced as well.
I was getting the same thing with network printers on a win2k sp3 pc connecting to a 5.5 update 2 server.
Here is what I did to fix things for me:
I created another network printer with the same IP address as the one that wasn't working. This printer worked. I still could not connect to my original printer. So, I created another network printer with the same IP address as well. This printer also worked. Then my original printer connection came back as well. So now I have 3 network printers defined with the same IP address. I deleted the 1st one, my original connection still worked, I deleted the 2nd one, and my orginal connection still worked. I went ahead and deleted my original one and re-created it with the same name, settings, etc. and it still works. I rebooted the server, and the printer still works.
I am not quite sure what the real issue is, but the above did fix it for me.
YMMV,
JB

I don't have any experience with a USB printer on SME, so I'm not going to be any good to you here.
Sorry. :(

No prob JB,
have problems with my printer on parallel too!
Server says 'lpd: lpd startup succeeded'
But my EPSON Status Monitor says, it can't communicate with the printer.
I can see the printjob at the printer-spooler under W2k and then it disappears.
I think the job is forwarded to the server.
Mmmmhhhhh. Don't know whats wrong with my config.
