I've never been able to get e-smith to act like a gateway, with the exception of using an external modem.
I tried every variation of com ports and interupts. I have a jumpered modem and I've tried it on all the comm ports and 10 settings, making sure e-smith was matched up. I know there is a file that will give me log messages, but Ive never been able to get logged on as root to get to it.
ROOT LOG-ON:
Do I key in ctrl-alt-f3 all at once like crtl-alt-del, or do I key in like typing, one at a time? Do I then use root as the log in name or admin? I hate to be so dumb, but I'm frustrated. I have to use a windows based masqurading package and e-smith just as a server. It's stupid to do it this way, but I can't get it working any other way.
By the way, the external modem worked the first time, but the bit rate was VERY slow, like a 2400baud modem of olden times.
Thanks for your help.........

Dear Henry
I'm using e-smith 4.05b, so my comments relate to this version.
1. To get into shell mode, hold down Ctl-Alt at same time with left hand fingers, then while keeping down press the F3 button with right hand fingers (same as Ctl-Alt-Del with Windows to re-start, but press F3 instead of Del)
2. To get in as the root user, user login name is "root" (without the ""). so type this in at the prompt. e-smith will then ask for a password - if you have NOT changed it, then type "admin" (without the ""). you are now logged in as the root (or super user). If you do not know what you are doing - be VERY careful.
3. Modem setup: Strongly suggest use a "normal" EXTERNAL modem (NOT a WINMODEM). Setup with this is easy/simple and painless during the e-smith install. You just need to know what serial port the modem is connected to (usually 1 or 2). e-smith detects your modem and does all the hard work.
Hope this was some small help.
Stick with it - e-smith is a very good product. and you will not normally need to go behind the manager/console set up by e-smith, so control over a network is very easy and "cheap" as no need to extra monitor etc.

Just Alt-F3 will do fine.

No, "default" (without the ""). But of course, you should change that to a proper password ASAP.
