We've experienced problems recently with internet access (from inside our network) being really slow. Our SME server (SME8 all updates applied) on a Poweredge R200 with 8GB RAM is in server/gateway mode.
Yesterday, after having tried pretty much everything else (including swapping out switches and wireless access point), I tried disabling the DHCP on the SME and using a pfsense firewall running on Soekris hardware as our internet gateway. Speed is back to normal.
Our website and mail - running on the Dell - are fine, and access speed from the outside is fine. The server starts/restarts normally, without throwing up any errors.
Anyone have any suggestions why this could be? (If you need to see log files, tell me what to post)
Thanks.

Hi Dave,
could you please log your issue in bugzilla?
Thanks.

how many clients?
squid running on SME? any web filtering (squidguard/dansguardian)?
sometimes I had some issues with DNS.. solved setting up an external DNS server (forwarder)
my guess is that ISP (in my case) is limiting dns traffic toward root servers; using its dns server solved the issue
to understand where's your issue, you should use iptraf.. naturally, SME has to act as dhcp/dns server

Isn't it too late? The problem no longer exists, so how is Dave to investigate it?
