Title: SMTP issues Outlook 2013
Post by: tmorse23 on February 18, 2015, 02:01:54 AM
New installation of 9.0 with all updates installed. The problem exists with the handling of authentication in Outlook 2013 and Windows 8.1, no other clients (Thunderbird on Win 7/8 or Outlook on Win 7) have the issue. The issue was resolved with an upgrade to qpsmtpd-0.84-10, however the changes between that version and the new version (0.84-12) has revived the issue.

I have searched bugzilla to no end and found the resolution when I upgraded to 0.84-10. However I have no way to revert to that version from the current version. The last version I can yum downgrade to is 0.84-9.

I know this bug has been beat to death, however it doesn't help now as I have many user that cannot send email from Outlook. Obviously if I could resolve this within outlook or win 8.1 I would rather, but no google search has offered as much hope as these forums and the bug tracker.

Cheers
Tyler

Good morning,

I am not sure if downgrading a core component like qpsmtpd would be my favourite solution. I assume you have double-checked your Outlook configuration (SMTP port and security settings), that you are on SME9 and have the latest qpsmtpd-0.84-12 installed, but could you be a bit more specific on the issues you are experiencing and which previous bug(s) are you referring to?

Cheers, Mats

Bit of a long day at work, sorry for the lack of information.

SME Server 9.0 all updates running server only. The server is behind my firewall (Smoothwall) running a Spam package based on DSPAM.

I have a pretty good mixture of clients (Outlook various versions, and Thunderbird) All access smtp via SSL on 465. I have no issues receiving email POP3/IMAP. The issue only presents itself with users on Outlook and Windows 8.1 while trying to send. Outlook errors on 0x800CCC1A " your server does not support the encryption type you have specified". No other users were affected that used Outlook on Windows 7 or Thunderbird on Windows 7/8. Clearly points to an issue with the configuration of Outlook with Windows 8.1. The issue cleared when I found a solution in Bug 8826, that patch took the qpsmtpd package from 0.84-9 to 0.84-10. I updated via the smeupdates-testing repo as described in the bug. The issue reappeared after the most recent update (which I performed yesterday morning) bringing the version from 0.84-10 to 0.84-12 because of bug 8851.

Cheers
Tyler

That's quite strange. The change introduced in qpsmtpd-0.86-10 was to force usage of TLSv1 (disable SSLv3). It has been reverted in -12 'cause it broke some inbound email handling, but TLSv1 should still be available if outlook wants it, it's just not enforced (SSLv3 is still accepted). Please, open a bug with all the information you gave here

You are not running some kind of AV software on the Clients by chance?

Those clients are using MSE. I've tried all suggestions in that forum. Also we are not using Bitdefender. I've been through everything I could find about that error online. I've setup a separate computer, all things equal, and the issue persists. Disabling virus software, firewalls, both. I've tried every possible setting with different versions of Outlook with Win 8.1 pro and receive the same result. That issue does not exist with Thunderbird on Win 8.1.

No other users were affected that used Outlook on Windows 7 or Thunderbird on Windows 7/8.

outlook same version of the affected one on windows 8.1?

if so, I guess something wrong on O.S. side..

I've replicated the issue with Outlook 2013/Windows 8.1 pro on two machines. And Outlook 2010/Windows 8.1 pro on one machine.

The misleading part is that Thunderbird works fine with Windows 8.1 pro. That is the setup I am using on a machine now.

I understood but I was asking if outlook 2013 is affected on w7 too

Sorry, to my knowledge Outlook/Win 7 pro is not.

so, in the end, only w8.1 + outlook 2013 is affected, w7 + outlook 2013 is not, right?

Correct. Is there anyway to go back to version 0.84-10 in the interim?

You might still have the -10 version in /var/cache/yum, you can then manually downgrade with rpm -Uh --oldpackage

I looked last night... my yum cache setting is 0, they all cleared.

try this work around on w8:

Code: [Select]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS
1.2\Client]
"DisabledByDefault"=dword:00000001
"Enabled"=dword:00000000
and let us know, thank you

I responded in the bug as well

"I had found that solution when I had originally installed 9.0 and the bug revealed itself. However on the machines in question that key does not exist, there are only SSL 2.0 keys under that path."

Marked as solved with the registry creation/edit provided by Stefano. Be sure to merge the key and restart computer.

Cheers!

I think it is premature to mark this solved. You have found a workaround. We don't want to force everyone to make that change, and we may not be able to anyway. So we need to find a proper solution to the problem.

"they do not change".. they WHO? :)

SME is totally open source, then please join the devs and share your code and patches to migrate from qmail to postfix/whatever..

anyway, if you use SME you don't need anything (no compilation, no file configuration, nothing).. you need only to setup and configure it the way you need.. and, finally, I'm quite sure that no distro is perfect, so in any case you could find issues..

if you really what SME to be a better product, please get involved:
- with your time to help other users here
- with your time to test/verify bug fixes
- coding yourself patches (bug fixing or new features)
- making a big donation (money): as told above, SME is free to download and use, but it's development and this site (forums, wiki, bugzilla) are not..

thank you in advance
