I'm trying to set up a private server and gateway using V5.5 for a charity I support. The setup goes OK and I can see and setup the server from my browser. I cannot however get any workstations to route through to the internet. One thing that is confusing me is I cannot ping the server from any of the workstations but I can ping othet systems from the server. I can also see and connect to the server from windows. What am I doing wrong?
TIA

Is the server doing DHCP?
-
I've tried it using dhcp and fixed IP addresses with the correct gateway address set.

Hi Tony,
If you are using Private Server and Gateway, the server will not eccept pings from out side, as this is dissabled for security reasons, If you server is say 192.168.0.1 set your Windows box with a static IP of say 192.168.0.2 and set the gateway address to 192.168.0.1 also enter in the DNS and Gateway settings also make sure you have the correct Browser settings.

I am not trying to ping from outside. I would be very concerned I got a response if I did!
The DNS and gateway both point at 192.168.0.1.
The workstn is 192.168.0.43/255.255.255.0
I'm assume (dangerous I know) that the reason I cannot reach the internet thru the server is because I cannot 'see' it as evidenced by the failure to respond to a ping.
TIA,
Tony

Turn on DHCP and on one of the clients re-configure the IP to use DHCP, then check the allocated IP (if any).
Also try re-installing tcp/ip on the client before hand.

Tony,
When the server is in this mode it will not respond to the ping request, local or otherwise.
It states in the user manual, that the ping request is disabled in the private gateway server mode, not avalible.
I am using the same setup, I can access to net etc, but if I try to ping the server from the LAN no reponce.
Have you set the DNS and Gateway to the server ip address.

Assuming your server is setup correctly try the following
In internet explorer options/lan settings set the client to look at your server address and set the port to 3128
Using the private settings in e-smith you will not be able to ping the outside world
goodluck.

>Using the private settings in e-smith you will not be able to ping the outside world
Surely that is incorrect?
If the "private" server is acting as a gateway, then you will be able to ping sites on the internet (assuming they allow ping - not all do).
The issue is that the server does not respond to ping either from the internet OR from the internal network.

Try it yourself.
My setup is 2 nics, 1 to adsl and the other to the lan. Reconfigure your server from private gateway to gateway reboot and see. hahc-hmc.com will return a ping.
