Title: How to configure User Authentication with SME Server Squidguard
Post by: masotsha on May 05, 2015, 04:47:00 PM
Hello,

I have squidguard running in Transparent mode.  I want users to authenticate when accessing internet. How do I configure authentication in squid?

Thanks,

This is simply not possible. You cannot ask for authentication when squid is in transparent mode

Thanks for the reply. Let me rephrase and say how do I configure a non-transparent proxy using squidguard and squid to enable user authentication?

Thanks,

You can look at http://www.vanhees.cc/?q=node/58 as a starter. It was for SME 7.X but can probably be adapted easily.
Then, you need to configure every client to use explicitly squid (IP of your SME and port 3128). Note that passwords between the browser and the proxy are not protected, so you risk credentials leakage.

Use Dansguardian instead. It can be configured to use squidguard rules & there is full documentation on the Wiki.
