I just installed E-Smith 4.0b6, seems to be running great. It is also running kernel version 2.2.12-20, I guess, per the recommended site, www.partyvibe.com/e-smith, to use VPN-masquerade kernel version 2.2.13-1 is required. I've downloaded the 'kernel-2.2.13-1.src.rpm' . . . what now?
Someone earlier said there was nothing more than "rpm -Uvh *.rpm". Is this true? Is my current configuration at risk during such an upgrade?
In addition, a patch is required, upon download, I found a text file. Help me out here! What do I do with this text file?

No, that's not true for a src.rpm. A src.rpm file is not a program ready to run, but it is the source code ready to unpack, compile, then package up into an RPM file.

You use the patch command. You will need a linux development system to build your own kernel (complete with make, compilers, linkers, libraries etc), and you probably need more experience than you have :-)
There are some pretty good Linux books and on-line guides, and people at your local Linux user group will probably be happy to help and advise you.

I noticed that Coyote Linux includes a patched and updated kernel allowing for VPN clients to connect to VPN servers through the Coyote router, a very common activity, I would imagine. Being that Coyote Linux fits on a single floppy, I guess there is not too much involved [the humble opinion of a non-linux user].
While E-Smith has it's obvious advantages, I was wondering if it would be possible to release an image that included the features necessary to use VPN/PPTP through the E-smith servers. While it is described as a fairly simple upgrade/installation process, for those of us that simply want to install and run the server/router without getting in to the ins and outs of linux . . . it is a considerable obstacle.
If not, would a third party upload some step-by-step instructions for the upgrades . . . intended for the non-linux users?

Yes, I noticed the Coyote release with interest. I think you'd be surprised at how much is involved in putting together a distribution such as Coyote. In any case, I just don't have the spare time to put together a VPN/PPTP setup for E-smith servers, but I'm sure someone will some time. Stick with it..
Best wishes

I to could really use the step by step installation instructions for VPN masq. I know that 5 should have this support but that is months away. If anyone knows of directions for this I would truly appreciate it

If someone from e-smith is reading this (or other users who have accomplished this), I really need VPN support also!!
I have an NT box inside my network that my employer has provided and I'm to use it to VPN to work!
Any advice is greatly apprecaited!
Thanks in advance,
Matt
