Title: Domain connected Windows 10 with outlook 2013 email configuration issue
Post by: mercyh on June 22, 2016, 04:31:51 PM
Hi,

Has anyone successfully configured outlook 2013 running on windows 10 to connect to an SME 9.0 mail server?

For some reason, outlook 2013 cannot supply the account password to sme in an acceptable manner. (other clients on that machine work fine)

The error in outlook is:

"0x800CCC92: Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password for this account in Account Settings. The server responded: -ERR syntax error"

I have followed the directions for windows 8.1 from the following:

https://wiki.contribs.org/Email#Outlook_2013_on_Windows_8.1_gives_error_0x800CCC1A_when_sending_over_SMTP_port_465

but no joy....

IMAP also fails.

What does that mean ?

Have you tried logging in to sme server webmail via web browser ? Make sure you have enabled webmail in server manager.

This is not the same code as https://wiki.contribs.org/Email#Outlook_2013_on_Windows_8.1_gives_error_0x800CCC1A_when_sending_over_SMTP_port_465 (0x800CCC92 vs 0x800CCC1A).

Please, give us some details of how you have configured the account, and we'll try to identify if there's a bug, or if it's a configuration issue

The IMAP error code is:

"An unknown error occurred, error code 0x8004011c"

I think these are the log entries from the server that are relevant...

(1) LOG5[28163:140378824280000]: pop3s accepted connection from 192.168.123.173:56022
 (1) LOG5[28163:140378824280000]: Connection closed: 119 bytes sent to SSL, 29 bytes sent to socket

This is the POP3 log file, while you're configuring an IMAP account. Please tell us the parameters you're using (port, protocol etc...)

I suspect that outlook is just fighting against self signed certificate...

I am sorry that I did not make this clear..... EVERYTHING ABOVE THIS LINE HAS TO DO WITH POP SETTINGS

IMAP also fails.

I have tried so many things that it is getting confusing.

1> I copied the settings from a working outlook 2010 machine..

POP3 port:110 No ssl required
SMTP port: 25 with TLS

2> POP3 Port 995 with SSL (Certificate has been installed via login to webmail with Internet Explorer)
SMTP port: 25 with AUTO encryption

3> POP3 Port 995 with SSL
      SMTP port 465 with TLS

4> POP3 port 110 no ssl
     SMTP port 25 no encryption

I am sure this is an incompatibility with Windows 10/office 2013 and SME server. This machine was converted to windows 10 from Win 7 using the upgrade tool from Microsoft. After the upgrade email worked fine, however, the machine was somewhat unstable while running some other programs.

I did the machine restore which removes all user and is supposed to be the equivalent of a clean windows 10 install. After reinstalling office, the exact same settings I used before the reset no longer work. Multiple resets and installs later I came here to see if anyone has been able to get this combination to work with SME...

I have tried so many things that it is getting confusing.

To avoid confusion, what you need to do is report each individual thing which doesn't work, separately, in the bug tracker.

The issue with pop3s has already been reported by another user:

https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9553

There is only one thing that does not work (well maybe two...)

POP3 and IMAP email access using Windows 10 and outlook 2013 seems to be broken.

I was just trying to show what settings I had tried to rule out the possibility that there is a configuration combination that will work correctly...

So that is two - no "maybe" about it.

Please create a new bug report about IMAP, and add your information to the existing POP3s bug report. Thanks.

Look in server manager "View log files" panel, & select from the list of many log files.
The one you want should be obvious.

Can you please test email functionality by accessing webmail on your server using a web browser, with the same user account login that you are using in Outlook 2013.
Doing that successfully will rule out the possibility that you have server problems.
Enable webmail in server manager Email panel first.
Access webmail via
https://www.yourdomain.com/webmail

If that is accessible & works OK (ie you can login, read & send email), then you most likely have a email client configuration issue &/or a bug in sme server &/or Outlook 2013/Windows 10 combination & you should report your problem on bugzilla.

Webmail works fine, Thunderbird works fine FROM THIS WORKSTATION.

Outlook 2013 works fine FROM WORKSTATIONS RUNNING WINDOWS 7.

It is the Outlook 2013/Windows 10 combination that is giving trouble.

The following two bugs are relevant to this issue:

The Problem:

Domain users using windows 10 workstations on a Samba domain are unable to configure SME email accounts on Outlook 2013.

The Workaround:

To work around this problem, set the value of the ProtectionPolicy registry entry to 1 to enable local backup of the MasterKey instead of requiring a RWDC in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Protect\Providers\df9d8cd0-1501-11d1-8c7a-00c04fc297eb

On my workstation I had to create the ProtectionPolicy entry...

Is it possible to add the registry Entry to the win8 and 10samba.reg in the server-resources. Then it would be fixed right away?? Or create an Outlook.reg .
Thanks for the solution btw it works great.
