I am having some modem/router problems that require me to have SME use a DHCP server to get its IP address.
A quick search turned up a solution where you set up SME as a gateway/server and then plug the gateway side into the router's LAN ports:

I would just add another NIC, leave the additional port empty and use the modem/router for the rest of the computers. I have tried setting up SME for gateway/server without a second NIC and, of course, it doesn't work. -- worth a try, anyway.
Would this work? Or is there another option? I was hoping there might be a contrib that would make SME use DHCP in server only mode.

This not possible as server only...
However this is not a viable solution for a server to have dhcp attributed ip.
Your router should be ( and from what i have seen is able, as in place of selecting a device on the list you can enter an ip) able to handle a fixed ip device.
