Hi,
Please help me. I've just installed e-smith v3.0 (although the download screen
states that it is v3.1). When I do Ctrl-Alt-F3, I cannot login with
username: root
password: admin
I've tried uppercase, lowercase and mixed case, but it keeps telling me:
"Login incorrect".
Please tell me why it says that. I'd also like to know what to do once I do get
it right to login. Are there any commands I should type to get the service up and
running?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Paul has given you the answer to that.

If you haven't done so already, you should get a copy of the users guide and read it. I'm not sure why you are trying to log in, and as root. The e-smith server/gateway is designed to do its work without anyone having to log in. You configure it using the console and the web management interface and then just use it.

Thanks Paul,
I managed to login with password: default.
Now I have another problem, I've tried to gain access to the
server via the web-based interface, but when I connect to
http://my-ip/e-smith-manager, a popup window appears prompting
for a username and password(once again).
I've tried
username: root
password: default
AND
username: root
password: admin
without success. I'm busy downloading the user manual, but my
Internet connection is very slow and it will be another couple of
hours before it is done.
Please tell me how to gain access to the web-based interface.

I would recommend changing this password once you have gained access to your-ip.com/e-smith-manager.

Look to your left and you will see the download site. Probably the pdf file is your best choice for a user manual. It is indispensible.
